Trail of 100 Giants Trail Rehabilitation Project

Pre-bid Tour Notes

Pre-bid tour was held on July 29, 2020 at 10 AM on site. Sign-in roster was completed by all attendees.

The project COR, Steven Ray, reviewed the trail layout shown in the drawings, segments 1-5. Trail segments 1-3 are 25-30 years old and constructed on native material. Trail segments 4 and 5 are about 18 years old and include aggregate base under the asphalt trail. Segments 1-3 will typically require more repairs than segments 4-5 due to the age difference. Asphalt repairs require aggregate base to be placed (if not present) as shown in the drawings.

The COR reviewed the work item listing for the project, pointing out that minor slough removal and minor vegetation trimming are incidental to other project costs, as noted in the legend for the work item listing. The incidental work items are included in the work item listing.

The COR reviewed the schedule of items and the work descriptions and quantities for each item. A miscalculation was noted with the two crack seal pay items and the seal coat pay item. All three items are measured by Square Yard, and the total of the crack seal areas should equal the seal coat area.

Further review determined that the nominal areas calculated include the area under the berms, which cannot be crack sealed or seal coated. The quantities for all three pay items have been recalculated.

Attached is an updated Schedule of Items.

There are five trail bridges plus the boardwalk in the project (shown on the drawings) which are not to be crossed with equipment. The boardwalk is also blocked by a large Giant Sequoia tree, as noted in the work item listing. The trail bridges on segment 1 at STA 17+95 and STA 18+85 may be bypassed with equipment. The trail bridge on segment 5 at STA 02+70 may be bypassed with equipment. Other bridges and the boardwalk may not be crossed, but the trail segments can be accessed from other entrances or access points.

The existing asphalt berm (dike) on the trail is generally smaller than the typical detail shown on drawing sheet 4. Change the berm dimensions for the project from 8” wide to 5” wide at the base and from 4” wide to 2-1/2” wide at the top, with 1-1/4” taper on each side rather than 2” taper.

The work item listing for segment 1 STA 26+71 refers to a layout drawing which is not included in the drawings. The work includes 55 SF of asphalt to be removed and replaced as noted, but will be laid out in the field rather than shown on the drawings.

Tree roots under the trail are a common cause of asphalt damage. Where removal and replacement of asphalt is specified, tree roots are to be removed unless they are Giant Sequoia tree roots. These tree roots are to be left in place and cushioned over whenever possible.
