Roadside Brushing Questions and Answers

1. In the SOW it outlines that the area "Shall have all material cut of the proper diameter size requirement. Shall have material cut to the proper height requirement." However, in the details I was unable to find information as to what size diameter is required to be cut?

There are several large tree's up to 7" or 8" in diameter within 5' of the road just on the sections we have already driven, I am wondering if these need to be cut and felled? or do we mulch around them?

2. If they must be felled, are they to be left outside the brushed area? or must they be hauled off?

Cut Around trees over 4”. Face trees(cut branches) larger then 4” as close to tree as possible within brushing limit.

3. What is the height requirement for the project? I understand everything up to 12', but how low must it be cut off the ground?

6” above ground or any obstructions.

4. According to the Clearing Detail provided, it outlines 5' or 8' on the uphill side, but it also shows to the Top of Cut. In some areas, the top of the cut is within 3' of the road, so are we supposed to cut beyond this top of the cut if it is less than the 5' or 8'?

Yes cut beyond top of road cut if it is less then 5’ on road without ditch or 8’ on road with ditch.

5. The Clearing Detail also says 5' if there is no ditch, or 8' if there is a ditch. Many roads have a small swale for water drainage down the sides, is this classified as a ditch?

Yes If so, how do we know when 5' is required and when 8' is required? If road prism is outsloped and no distinct ditch is present then 5’ is required, if prism has ditch present then 8’ is required.

6. It also outlines measuring from the "existing width", does this include the shoulder? or just the main road?

Yes this includes the shoulder

7. In areas where there is only grass, and no woody brush or tree's, is the grass required to be cut as well?

Woody brush & Trees are what are required to be cut, I am not concerned with only grass.

8. Since it is a brush cutting job is use of equipment authorized or does it all have to be done with handheld tools only?

This was a question that came up among quite a few different companies. Tractors with boom mounted cutters are industry standard for this type of work, but this contract specifies and end product. I don’t believe it would be practical to accomplish this specified work with handheld tools.

9. If we invoice when we are done with however many miles and then it’s inspected and then paid?

Yes, only work that has been inspected and accepted can be paid for after contractor has submitted invoice Or do we need to invoice at certain mileage markers. Also, if the mobilization of equipment LS is paid out front. Mobilization cannot be paid before contractor has mobilized equipment and personnel to project.

10. What are the operating periods for this project? When can we start and what’s the latest it has to be done?

10/1/2024(estimated time of award) to 10/31/2025
