GTAC Server Network Management for BFB Data Center Statement of Objectives

November 9, 2018

1 BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The USDA Forest Service (FS) Geospatial Technology and Applications Center (GTAC, or The Center) is currently located at West Valley City, Utah. The Center will move all of its operations to a new location at the Bennett Federal Building (BFB), Salt Lake City, beginning in December 2018 and completed January 14, 2019. The Center operates an onsite datacenter of approximately 70 servers and storage appliances which will also be relocated to a newly constructed datacenter at the BFB. Servers, storage, and new Cisco Nexus networking hardware at the BFB datacenter will be installed in early December 2018.

The current datacenter network, which is End of Life and being replaced, consists of Cisco Catalyst equipment which has been supported and managed by the FS Network Operations staff.

The datacenter network at BFB will consist of new Cisco Nexus, for which the FS Network Operations group is not able to provide configuration or ongoing support. The new datacenter network will connect to the core GTAC Cisco Catalyst network, which is also new and will be configured and managed by the FS Network Operations staff. Configuration of both the core GTAC network and the datacenter network is expected to occur the week of December 3 or December 10, 2018. This RFI describes the network/server environment, the Cisco Nexus hardware being deployed, and the configuration and support activities being requested for the Nexus datacenter network.

2 OBJECTIVE – ACTIVITIES DETAIL

The Nexus hardware will be physically installed by Forest Service staff in the BFB datacenter in early December. This hardware consist of two (2) 9504 access switches, connected to eight (8) Nexus 2000 fabric extenders (FEX with 48 port GT each for server access), and a single Nexus 9300, all identified in the attached Cisco Bill of Materials. This RFI requests the logical configuration implementation of this network to support the GTAC server and storage environment and to connect to the core GTAC network in accordance with USDA and FS policies.

The initial configuration is desired to be completed between December 3 and December 14, 2018, allowing GTAC servers to connect to the completed datacenter network and thus to the core GTAC network by December 14. All Nexus switches are new and will require appropriate OS updates to be applied before the network configuration is implemented. The server access connectivity required at this point will be on two (2) Class C subnets and may be over a single (Default) vLAN for all ports on all eight (8) FEX. Connectivity to the core GTAC network will be made in coordination with the FS Network Operations staff.

The move to BFB, including the approximately 140 GTAC employees and computer users (on a different, FS-configured Catalyst desktop access layer and core) and the final datacenter environment, will be completed by January 14, 2019. Between January 10 and January 14 the remaining three (3) or four (4) Class C subnets will be applied (under this RFI) to the datacenter network as they are decommissioned on the old (West Valley City location) network. This work will be in coordination with FS Networking Operations staff. Also at that time the configuration will need to be assessed and any necessary changes made to the logical configuration. Optional here is the implementation of two (2) to four (4) VLANs across the server access network, also mentioned below. All configuration should be properly documented.

Additionally, routine ongoing operations and maintenance activities for the Cisco Nexus network are requested under this RFI. It is expected that there will not be any requests for changes to the configuration, but that a monthly report of network health be provided to GTAC. Information regarding this option should be separated from the configuration requirements.

Work shall be performed in coordination with GTAC and the FS Network Operations staff as required for connectivity and other configuration objectives. The Cisco Nexus architecture to be configured has been validated by Cisco and is identified in the attached Bill of Materials. It consists of two (2) Nexus 9504 Chassis (w redundant supervisors), one (1) Nexus 9300, and eight (8) Nexus 2000 fabric extenders (FEX; 48 10GT ports each). All initial physical (fiber and copper) connections will be completed by GTAC during the hardware install. Logical configuration may eventually include two to four VLANs not yet identified (should be reflected separately as “Optional”), but initial configuration may consist of a single (Default) vLAN.

Forest Service Network Operations group will provide specific configuration requirements.

All work and configuration will be documented. Final configuration after the January modifications will be documented as “baseline.” Forest Service Network Operations staff will review final documentation with the vendor.

3 SUMMARY OF REQUESTED TIMELINE FOR ACTIVITIES

1) December (probably onsite) – Network implementation will consist of applying Cisco NX-OS and other updates to the hardware, applying required FS policy and security configurations, and establishing two or three Class C subnets to the network for access by the servers and storage through the FEX during the December initial configuration. At this point the servers on those subnets should be able to connect to other servers on that network, and to the FS network via the connectivity with the core GTAC Catalyst network. Configurations should be fully documented.

2) January (possibly not onsite) – During the final move phase, three (3) or four (4) additional Class C subnets will be added to the server access network, and any changes required to the configuration will be made. Final configuration after the January modifications will be documented as “baseline.”
