PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. This section includes requirements for the abandonment of water supply wells.

1.2 SECTION REQUIREMENTS

A. Submittals:

1. Driller Qualifications (SD-07, Certificates), FIO

2. DWR 55-58 (SD-07, Certificates), FIO

B. Forms: Verify with the required reporting agency to obtain the latest revised forms.

1. DWR 55-58 Well Abandonment Completion Report

1.3 QUALIFICATIONS

A. Submit personnel documentation and experience, including driller license with the State of Arizona, and document a minimum of 5 years of well installation and abandonment experience.

1.4 POLICY AND REGULATION

A. Specifications herein are identified from the ADWR Well Abandonment Handbook, September 2008. Verify with the handbook all requirements prior to abandonment activities.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 GENERAL

A. Provide and install compatible materials for casing, screen, and other well material, to prevent galvanic reaction between components of the completed well.

2.2 MATERIALS

A. Neat Cement Grout: Mixing ratio of one 94-pound sack of cement with not more than six (6) gallons of water, and pumped with a tremie pipe.

B. Concrete or Concrete Grout: Mixing ratio of cement, sand, and aggregate with no less than seven (7) 94-pound sacks of cement per cubic yard of concrete, with not more than seven (7) gallons of water per sack of cement.

WELL ABANDONMENT 332900 - 2

C. Sand Cement Grout: Mixing ratio of one part cement and no more than one part sand by volume, with not more than six (6) gallons of water.

D. Cement-Bentonite Grout: Mixing ratio of one sack of cement (94-pound) and 3-5 pounds of bentonite, with not more than six and one-half (6.5) gallons of water.

E. Sand-Bentonite Grout: Mixing Ratio of equal parts sand and bentonite by volume, with slightly more than one (1) gallon of water per pound of sand.

F. High-Solids Bentonite Grout with one of the following:

1. Minimum 15% solids by weight and minimum grout density of 9.2 lbs/gallon, with mixing ratio of:

a. Powder Mixture: Fifty (50) pounds dry bentonite powder with thirty-four (34) gallons of water, or

b. Granular Mixture: One hundred fifty (150) pounds granular bentonite and 1 quart polymer with one hundred (100) gallons of water.

2. Minimum 25% solids by weight and minimum grount density of 10 lbs/gallon with mixing ratio of:

a. Powder Mixture: Fifty (50) pounds dry bentonite powder with eighteen (18) gallons of water, or

b. Granular Mixture: One hundred fifty (150) pounds granular bentonite and 1 quart polymer with fifty-four (54) gallons of water.

G. High-Solids Bentonite Chips and Pellets: Ratio of pour not to exceed 50 pounds / 5 minutes, and hydrated if used in vadose zone.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 GENERAL

A. Place materials or mixtures with sufficient pressure to fill all voids, including all annular spaces, and displace water from the well.

B. When grout is placed, used a tremie pipe and raise at a rate that will keep the bottom of the pipe no more than 3 feet above the grout level at all times.

C. When high-solids bentonite chips and pellets are used, hydrate to the manufacturer’s specifications.

D. Provide materials and mixtures exceeding approximately 30% of the casing volume.

3.2 SURFACE SEAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Surface Casing Removal Option

1. If the casing is removed from the top 20 feet of the well, install a cement grout plug extending from two feet below the land surface to a minimum of twenty feet below the land surface.

2. Backfill well above the top of the cement grout plug to the original land surface.

WELL ABANDONMENT 332900 - 3

B. Surface Casing Non-Removal Option

1. If the casing is not removed from the top 20 feet of the well, install a cement grout plug extending from the top of the casing to a minimum twenty feet below the land surface.

2. Fill the annular space outside the casing with cement from the land surface to a minimum twenty feet below the land surface.

3.3 STANDARD METHOD

A. [Remove the entire length of well casing] OR [Re-perforate the entire length of the casing, a minimum two cuts per foot, from 20 feet above the highest historic water level to the total depth of the well].

1. Primary Casing Material: Steel, 6-inch nominal diameter

2. Primary Casing Depth Range: 50-60 FT

3. Highest Historic Water Level Elevation (measured from the top of the well): 28 FT

4. Well Depth: 56 FT

B. Fill the well completely with neat cement, cement-bentonite grout, or, except where free-product contamination is present, high-solids bentonite grout (granular or powder mixtures) with a minimum of 25% solids by weight.

3.4 SITE CLEANUP

A. After completion of the work, remove tools, appliances, surplus materials, temporary drainage, rubbish, and debris incidental to the work.

B. Backfill excavation and vehicular ruts and dress to conform to the existing landscape.

C. Repair or replace utilities, structures, roads, fences, or other pre-existing items that was damaged by the Contractor’s negligence.

3.5 POST-ABONDONMENT

A. Within 14 days of the completed well abandonment activities, fill out and submit DWR 55-58 Well Abandonment Completion Report.
