Shasta-Trinity National Forest Shasta-McCloud Management Unit Rattle Timber sale Sale Number 61401 General Cruise Instructions

Strata 3, Plantation Sawtimber

A. Unit(s) Information

Units: 747 (308.5 Acres), 784 (10.9 Acres), and 785 (11.5 Acres)

Total acres: 330.9

B. Cruise Information

Cruise Method: FCM, 1/20th acre plots, product code 01.

Number of plots: 81 Plot interval: 422 feet

Fixed Plot Size: 1/20-acre Plot Radius: 26.3 feet

Plot Allocation per Unit: 747 (76 Plots), 785 (3 Plots), 784 (3 Plots)

Sawtimber DBH range: > 10.0 inches

Limiting distance formula: limiting distance (LD) = plot radius – (.5 x DBH / 12)

If on slope (>10%), limiting distance (LD) = { plot radius – (.5 x DBH / 12) } * slope correction factor

C. Cruise Instructions

1. Establishing Plots

a. Establish plots at the designated locations with either GPS or conventional means. These plots are designated to be in the same location as the plots in Strata 4. Refer to Rattle cruise map to see plot locations.

b. Paint with pink marking paint the point where the pin flag enters the ground. Paint only bare mineral soil.

c. Sale name, cruise plot number for strata 3, and unit will be marked on the wire flag.

d. A strip of white and orange flagging will be placed, overhanging the plot center if possible. The flagging should state sale name, unit number, cruise plot number, crew initials, and a date.

2. Recording Cruise Plot Information

a. Apply the silvicultural prescription per unit to determine cut vs leave tree. Only cut trees will be marked.

b. At cruise plot, establish north from the plot center. Tally and cruise trees will be recorded in order from a clockwise rotation from north, in a list separate from the consecutive order of biomass size trees in strata 4.

· If the “center” of a cut tree, equal to or greater than 10.0” DBH, is on due north that tree will be number 1.

c. Measure and tally all cut trees that are equal to or greater than 10.0” DBH within the plot radius.

d. The data recorder will determine cruise (measure) vs. tally (count) trees on the plot.

e. Number each cruise tree with pink marking paint, facing plot center. Count trees only require a dot with pink tree marking paint, facing plot center.

f. Cruise data to be recorded includes the following: Unit number, tree number, specie, measure/count, DBH to nearest 1/10th, height to nearest foot, hidden defect, Top DIB, defect by log in %, description of defect by log in remarks, and cruiser initials.

· All measure trees 10.0”-19.9” DBH will have the MUTD (Top DIB) set to 6”. All measure trees with a DBH of 20.0” and greater will have the appropriate MUTD recorded as per the R5 Timber Cruising Handbook, FSH 2409.12, chapter 20.

g. Data for count trees will only need unit number, tree number, and specie.

h. For all knobcone and lodgepole pine, set MUTD to 1.0”, record no hidden defect, and record no defect by log. All knobcone and lodgepole will be treated as green biomass.

i. Any borderline trees, within 1 foot of outer radius of plot, will be measured with the “limiting distance formula” to determine whether the tree is within plot. Mark any tree with a “L”, if limiting distance formula was applied. Use the Limiting Distance Calculator, under Menu, in FS Cruiser version 2 to record measurements. Example: DBH, Slope %, FPS (Fixed Plot Size), and Slope Distance.

j. Measured distance is from the face (of tree facing plot) at DBH, measured to the ground where the plot flag enters the ground.

k. Record plot as “Null” if there are no trees to tally or measure.

l. For borderline plots apply the walk-through method. Record which trees are the “walk-through” (WT) trees in remarks. Add the WT tree after the last normally recorded tree on the plot and indicate which cruise or count tree on the plot was the WT in remarks. Example: tree #4 WT. If measure tree, duplicate all cruise measurements. If count tree, duplicate the count.

Procedure for using the Walk-Through Method

(1)
Determine “in” trees from the original sample point and record them (inside unit only).
(2)
Measure the distance and direction from the sample point to the center of each “in” tree.
(3)
“Walk through” the same distance and direction past the center of the tree.
(4)
If the point so located falls outside of the unit boundary, tally that tree twice.
(5)
Record trees 1 and 2 twice. They are recorded as trees 8 and 9 on this plot.

Repeat their measurements. In remarks, example: for cruise tree 8, “tree #1 WT”

E. Paint

1. Tracer Paint

a. Only paint containing an approved tracer element will be used in this sale.

b. Tracer paint tests will be conducted periodically on random trees in the sale. These tests will be documented at the conclusion of marking.

Strata 4, Plantation Biomass

A. Unit(s) Information

Units: 747 (308.5 Acres), 784 (10.9 Acres), and 785 (11.5 Acres)

Total GPS acres: 330.9

B. Cruise Information

Cruise Method: FCM, 1/20th acre plots, product code 20.

Number of plots: 76 Plot interval: 422 feet (nested with strata 3 plots)

Fixed Plot Size: 1/20-acre Plot Radius: 26.3 feet

Plot Allocation per Unit: 747 (76 Plots), 785 (3 Plots), 784 (2 Plots)

Biomass DBH range: 3.0-9.9 inches

· All LP and KP 3.0 inches DBH and greater are biomass.

Limiting distance formula: limiting distance (LD) = plot radius – (.5 x DBH / 12)

If on slope (>10%): limiting distance (LD) = { plot radius – (.5 x DBH / 12) } * slope correction factor
