Demolition, Removal, Disposal of the Existing Shed and Constructing a Larger Metal Shed at Ashe Seed Extractor in Desoto National Forest
Project Description
Ashe Seed Extractor shed is located on the Desoto National Forest in Forrest County. Legal description:
Brooklyn, MS Quad; Sec.2, T1N, R12W. The directions for finding the existing Ashe seed extractor shed is to take Highway 49 South out of Hattiesburg for 15.9 miles. Turn left Main Avenue for 1.3 miles.
Continue straight on to Ashe Nursery Road for 3.1 miles. Ashe Nursery will be on your left. There is a locked gate, so if you would like to visit the site please contact the Forest Service for access.
This project will involve the demolition, removal, and disposal off of Forest Service property of the existing pole shed and the erection of a larger metal shed, which will be open on all sides. Below is a list of items to be aware of on this project:
• No explosives will be permitted
• If hazardous materials are discovered during the removal operations, stop work and notify the
COR; hazardous materials including asbestos-containing materials, PCBs and mercury.
• Do not disrupt public utilities without a permit from the authority having jurisdiction.
• Leave sites and adjacent areas in clean condition.
• OSHA standards for metal building construction shall be adhered to by the construction crew while working on this project.
• All building demolition and construction permits required for this project are the contractor’s responsibility to be in compliance with local codes.
• The contractor will be responsible for calling 811 before digging the piers for the foundation of the building and notifying the COR so the archeologists can be at the site while digging the piers.
• In the future, the Forest Service may add on to the new metal building, so keep this in mind when designing and building this structure.
Description of Work
1. This work consists of the mobilization and demobilization of the contractor's forces and equipment necessary for performing the work required under the contract. Mobilization shall include all activities and associated costs for transportation of contractor's personnel, equipment, and operating supplies to the site; establishment of offices, buildings, and other necessary general facilities for the contractor's operations at the site. Demobilization shall include all activities and costs for transportation of personnel, equipment, and supplies not required or included in the contract from the site; including the disassembly, removal, and site cleanup of offices, buildings, and other facilities assembled on the site specifically for this contract.
2. Demolish, remove and dispose of the pole shed, which is 58’-5” x 23’-6”. The roof is metal.
The beams are wood and the columns are steel. All of the debris from the demolition of the building will be removed from Forest Service property and disposed of according to Federal, State, and local laws. See pictures of existing site pages 4-10.
3. This specification includes metal building systems designed by the manufacturer and supplied by a single source. The system includes clearspan rigid gable symmetrical frame, secondary frame members, anchor bolt system, trim, and a roof system. See drawing 1 on page 11. All framing members shall be shop fabricated for field bolted assembly and red oxide primer baked on after forming or welding. Roof covering shall be designed to carry the loads and weather tight. All fasteners for the roof covering shall be sized and designed to carry the loads and weather tight. Flashing and trim shall be furnished wherever necessary to provide weather tightness and a finished appearance. Eave gutters and downspouts shall be provided, which shall be sized for the building runoff. Tube sealant shall be provided for eave gutter. This building will not have wall panels, electrical, plumbing or insulation. The building shall be designed by the manufacturer as a complete system. All components of the system shall be supplied or specified by the same manufacturer. The main frame, roof, secondary frame, anchor bolts, and pier footing for the columns shall be designed according to the local design or Mississippi code if a local code does not exist.
The following is a list of the requirements for the new metal shed:
• The metal shed shall be 90’-0” by 40’-0”, have a roof pitch of 2/12, and 23’ tall at the top of the peak of the roof. The peak of the roof will sit under the soffit of the existing seed warehouse as close as possible to the wall of the building. The soffit of the seed warehouse is approximately 24’-6” high.
• Most of the pier footings will need to go through the existing concrete slab. This is dependent on the placement of the new building.
• The two roll-up doors need to be under the new metal shed and the columns do not need to block the entrance to the doors. See drawing 2 on page 12.
