About this file
This is a Questions and Answers document for the Grey Towers Historic Terrace and Walkways Restoration project, dated 15 April 2026. The document addresses contractor inquiries regarding four distinct work areas: Star and Diamond Terrace, Marble Court, Finger Bowl, and Stairs by Moat.
For the Star and Diamond Terrace section, responses clarify site logistics including limited access with designated stockpiling areas per drawing L1.01, permission to place a removal container on the asphalt area, and access for skid steer equipment as referenced in Statement of Work 1.4 A and Section 011400. Existing broken stones require replacement unless otherwise noted on drawings or specifications for reuse. Stone breakage during removal is governed by FAR clause 52.236-9, which protects adjacent areas. Regarding stone cleaning, the Statement of Work calls for cleaning despite drawings showing no cleaning requirements, and contractors are directed to refer to the Statement of Work. Required mockups are specified in sections 013300-2.1B, 013300-2.1C, 040140-1.5, and 040513-1.3. For the Marble Court, new pink granite pool coping must be purchased as various existing pieces are broken and require matching; irregular cut black and pink granite setts cannot be salvaged and reused but must be newly purchased per specifications and drawings. Finger Bowl specifications provide interior water feature dimensions (45½" depth, 165" length, 112¼" width) with additional reference materials available through the USDA Forest Service Grey Towers website virtual tour. The contractor bears full responsibility for replacing any stonework broken during dismantling or project execution, including material and labor costs. For the Stairs by Moat area, the missing bluestone bench piece is located on-site directly behind the bench under the hemlock hedge.
