About this file
This document contains questions and answers regarding the relocation of an existing vault toilet. The questions address whether the existing hole can be left in place and covered, or if a new septic tank can be installed under a moved toilet. The answers recommend against both options, citing that leaving the existing location would be atypical and drive costs higher to have a new vault installed later. Installing a new septic system is also not recommended as it would not meet venting requirements and increase project costs through inflation compared to full removal of the existing vault. No dimensions of the current vault are provided.
The related federal contract opportunity is solicitation number 12445123Q0037 from the Department of Agriculture Forest Service for the relocation of an existing vault toilet.

Text version
This unit has been moved before but it is unknown the dimensions and/or the shape that the unit is in.
• Can I cleanout, backfill, cover the exisng hole and leave it?
Answer: If this queson is asking to leave the vault, I would say that would not be recommended.
Cosng would be driven higher by having to have a new vault, and leaving an exisng locaon without removal would seem to be atypical for what I have seen on the forest.
• Can I add a new sepc tank under the moved toilet?
Answer: As per the above queson response, I believe we would not recommend this either. This would drive the project cost higher as an enre new vault would be needed. Inflaon cosng alone would make this much higher than removing the exisng vault. In conjuncon, I’m sure there are EPA regulaons and guidelines for what must be done to meet a SST requirements (along with other guidelines). I do not believe a sepc system would meet the requirements for venng.
• How deep is the current hole or tank?
Answer: I do not have an answer for the actual dimensions of the current vault. I’m sure there is a model number with defined dimensions pending the age of the structure.
