2.0 Background

In 2010, the IITF became the custodian of two new properties transferred from the USDA Farm Service Administration. These two properties became designated as Institute Research Areas. The Guayama Research Area is located on the south side of Puerto Rico where the Guayama, Cayey, and Salinas municipalities meet. This property has an area of approximately 141 hectares with steep topography which translates to diverse vegetation in the area. Quebrada del Palo crosses the Guayama Research Area from east to west. There are several intermittent streams that feed Quebrada del Palo inside this research area. The property has a small network of old, unpaved farm roads that provide access from its east side. The internal unpaved roads will be useful for supporting future research programs at this research area. There is also an unpaved road north of the property through Cayey that provides access to the Guayama

Research Area. The property is currently being surveyed.

In 2015 a new weather tower was installed in the Guayama Research Area. The tower and sensors received extensive damage during

Hurricane Maria in September 2017. In March 2018, the Institute received help from the Southern Research Station Coweeta

Hydrologic Laboratory in repairing and restoring this tower and other instruments in the Institute's Experimental Forests and Research

Areas. The maintenance of this area is important to the continuation of research.
