About this file

This is a Questions and Answers document dated February 25, 2026, regarding an autoclave procurement for the Forest Service. The document does not provide specific response dates, award dates, pricing terms, or set-asides, as it functions as a clarification supplement to a separate solicitation document.

The Forest Service seeks to procure a new autoclave for sterilizing research supplies and equipment, including glass, liquids, autoclavable plastics, and metal materials. Key procurement requirements include freestanding placement in a 7-foot depth by 9-foot width room with a 31-inch wide entrance doorway, with the unit required to be movable via castors for maintenance access. Multiple technical specifications referenced on page six of the primary solicitation govern material composition, vacuum cycle requirements, steam sourcing, and water type specifications. The respondent indicates that specific details regarding stainless versus carbon steel composition, pre-vacuum cycle requirements, building steam source availability, water feed type, and other technical parameters are detailed in the salient characteristics document on page six, which is not included in this attachment.

Q1. Will the autoclave be stainless steel or carbon steel?

A1. Please see page six for the salient characteristics required.

Q2. What are you sterilizing? (a brief description is ok, and if you don't know we can address specifics later).

A2. We plan to sterilize supplies and equipment required for completing Forest Service research experiments, including glass, liquids, autoclavable plastics, and metal materials.

Q3. Are you replacing an existing sterilizer or will this be for a new placement?

A3. This will be for a new placement.

Q4. Will the sterilizer sit freestanding in a room (similar to a refrigerator) or recessed through a wall?

A4. Please see page six for the salient characteristics required. We have no intention of recessing this unit.

Q5. Will you need to run a pre-vacuum cycle? Or would a liquid and a gravity, with post-vac drying be sufficient?

A5. Please see page six for the salient characteristics required.

Q6. Is there a building steam source available, or do you need a steam generator?

A6. Please see page six for the salient characteristics required.

Q7. What type of water would be fed to the sterilizer? (Tap, Treated, RO, DI, etc.)

A7. Please see page six for the salient characteristics required.

Q8. We recommend 18-24" on both sides and rear of the unit for service access but can customize if necessary. Do you have any space constraints?

A8. The location planned for the autoclave (which is still subject to change as space use conversations are currently ongoing) is a room with a 7-foot depth and 9-foot width with a 31” wide entrance doorway. Per our page six salient characteristics required, we would expect the autoclave to be movable by rolling on castors if access to the sides or rear of the unit was required for maintenance or repair.
