About this file

This document contains questions and answers regarding a solicitation for tree caging services on the Monongahela National Forest. The contractor will be required to furnish all labor, materials, supervision, transportation, and equipment to construct and place tree cages for deer browsing prevention and forest regeneration. A site visit is necessary but must be done on foot as gates are locked; however, an UTV can be used to access work areas if awarded the contract. Five-foot tall wire cages will be secured with 5-foot long fiberglass rods driven into the ground without a specified depth, just that the cages cannot fall over. The purpose of the work is to prevent deer browsing and ensure proper regeneration of preferred trees on the Monongahela National Forest for the Department of Agriculture Forest Service R9-Eastern Region.

Questions and Answers 12444324Q0025

1. In regards to the site visit, which from what I read, is up to us to visit the site; are UTV’s permissible? I’m not sure how far off the roads each unit is located, nor am sure how close an side by side (UTV) can actually get to the unit / work area. Typically many of the FS gates are closed and locked that could lead to the general area of FS roads, so I’m asking if utv’s are permissible in the woods for material transport during the project? And if we are able to get vehicles or utv’s close to the sites during our inspection pre-bid?

a. You have to walk into the units to look at them, they are behind locked gates. Units 25, 27, 28, an 29 are not far behind the gate. You can use a UTV to do the work if you get the contract.

2. Also, in regards to the fiberglass rod/stakes/rebar that will support the cages (2 per cage according to SOW)…… it states that we are to use 5ft tall fencing and also states 5ft long rods. Is this correct, and if so, due to the fact that they need to be driven into the ground….is there a certain depth to drive them OR height out of the ground they will need to be, considering once driven, a 5ft rod will not be as tall as the wire cage?

a. 5-ft, 3/8-in dia rods will be used to secure the cage, there is not a specific depth to drive the rods just make sure the cage will not fall over. The rods will be shorter than the top of the cage.
