The garlic mustard infestation is located in T 34N R 14E Sections 5, 7, and 8. The garlic mustard infestation is primarily within the interior of mixed northern hardwood stands, with almost 10% occurring along Forest Service roads, routes, and trails. All infestations are within a 0.25 mile of Forest Service roads, routes, and trails. The garlic mustard infestation occurs within approximately 83 acres of mixed northern hardwood stands and along 0.2 miles of County Highway W,
0.4 miles of FS road 2647 (Macarthur Trail), and 0.1 miles of FS3203 (Switzer’s Point Rd).
Treatment Requirements
The contractor will treat the garlic mustard with herbicides that have been approved by the Forest Service.
The herbicides approved for use include triclopyr, metsulfuron methyl, glyphosate, aminopyralid, imazapic, and clopyralid. The Contractor is responsible for using the correct chemical and mixture for the contract area, following label directions and state laws. The preferred chemical and mixture to treat garlic mustard is a tank mix of 2% (2.6 ounces/gallon) triclopyr (ex. Garlon 4) with 0.02% metsulfuron methyl
(ex. Escort XP) stock solution (1.6 ounces/gallon).
This contract will allow the use ATVs on designated roads and trails with a spray wand and tank, as well as backpack sprayers and handheld sprayers. Other methods of application may be acceptable with prior approval of the COR. Large scale broadcast spraying will not be allowed. Great caution should be taken to avoid spraying non-target plants. These infestations are located in areas that require spot spraying, since native vegetation is abundant. If ATVs are to be used, the Contractor shall bring clean (weed seed-free) ATVs to the Forest.
The contractor is responsible for searching for and treating garlic mustard within the contract area. The Contractor is responsible for treating all garlic mustard infestations as depicted on the included maps, as well as garlic mustard infestations found incidentally during treatments. The Contractor is required to submit GPS coordinates of new infestations not previously inventoried.
Garlic mustard infestations in the contract area have been treated with herbicide in previous years.
Depending on the lateness of the spring, previous treatments have occurred from late April to early June, with the last half of May as the typical treatment window. Treatment shall occur when garlic mustard plants are in the rosette to bolting/early flowering stage.
All herbicide mixes must also include a dye to indicate where herbicides have been applied. Site inspections will be conducted during and after contract implementation to check on target species applications.
Bidders are urged to inspect the general Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest (CNNF) work area prior to submission of a bid. It is impossible to describe fully the area, work problems, and other conditions that may be factors in submitting a bid. Only by physical inspection can the prospective bidder be assured of the existing conditions. You may inspect the site on your own or call Nicole Shutt, Lakewood-Laona Ranger District Biological Science Technician, at (715) 276-6333 to arrange a pre-bid site meeting.
Before any contract work is started, the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) will arrange for a pre-work conference to discuss contract provisions and specifications.
