Suitable material shall be from a designated weed free source. Submittal to the COR for approval prior to placement.

Activity: Method of Measurement: Measurement for this activity will be Cubic Yards. Payment shall be made after submittal of material tickets and work under this pay item has been accomplished.

Standard Specifications for Construction of Trails and Trail Bridges on Forest Service Projects, section 913.20.06, Spreading and Compacting. Compact material by using a roller or mechanical hand tamper until the density is at least 95 percent of the maximum density as determined by

AASHTO T99, Method C or D. Prior to paving, all loose aggregate, soil, or other deleterious material shall be removed from the surface to be paved. The contractor shall obtain approval of the base by the COR prior to paving.

Activity: Method of Measurement: Measurement for this activity will be made by the Ton.

Payment shall be made after the inspection and acceptance of work and collection of load tickets.

Pay Item 913.20

Hot Asphalt Plant Mix Trail Surfacing - Includes all labor, equipment, materials, hauling, placement, and compaction of asphalt. Compact asphalt according to U.S. Customary Standard

Specifications for Construction of Trails and Trail Bridges on Forest Service Projects, section

913.20.06, Placement and Compaction. Asphalt thickness shall be 3 inches. Adjust asphalt thickness to match the elevations on all existing approaches for a smooth transition on all trail bridge and ramp approaches throughout the trails. Adjustment of thickness is limited to approximately 15% on all approaches. Trail widths at bridge approaches widen to approximately

16 feet wide. The width of both trail bridges is 6 feet. The contractor shall submit a mix design to the COR for acceptance at least 14 days prior to paving. Use a mix design that is in use by the the Alabama Department of Transportation with an ESAL range of A/B and an aggregate gradation of a 3/8 inch maximum particle size. Submit a certificate of compliance that the mix meets requirements. Construct control joints in areas along the trail between asphalt and concrete AS

SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS. Place tack coating to bind new asphalt with old asphalt in areas along the trail where existing asphalt will remain, such as when the trail intersects parking lots. The contractor shall submit haul tickets verifying quantities delivered to the project site.

Activity: Method of Measurement: Measurement for this activity will be made by the Ton.

Payment shall be made after the inspection and acceptance of work and collection of load tickets.

Item 913.20.03

Weather Limitations – Do not place the asphalt mixture when weather conditions prevent the proper compaction of the mixture, the base course is frozen, or the average temperature of the underlying surface upon which the asphalt mixture is to be placed is less than 55°F. Do not place when it is raining or snowing.

Item 913.20.55 Surface Preparation – Remove loose aggregate, soil, or other deleterious materials from the surface to be paved. Prepare the base or trailbed by shaping, watering, and compacting before placing plant mix. Obtain COR approval before placing plant mix on prepared base.

Item 913.20.06 Placement and Compaction - Place and compact plant mix to meet lines, grades, and thickness

SHOWN ON THE PLANS. Avoid segregation of mix. Hand or small machine placement of mix is permitted in areas where asphalt paving machines cannot be accessed. When using asphalt paving machines, use only self-contained, power-propelled paving machine units, provided with an adjustable activated screed or strike-off assembly, heated if necessary, and capable of spreading and finishing coarse of asphalt plant mix to the required widths and thickness.

Start compaction when the mix is above 230°F. Compact the mix with at least three passes over the entire trail surface. Use a steel wheel power roller that is of a minimum weight of 1 ton.

Use a steel wheel power roller that is of a minimum weight of 1 ton. Use vibratory plate compactors in areas that are not accessible to rollers. Continue compaction over the full width of the layer until visible deformation of the layer ceases.

Item 950.00.01 Signs and Markers – This work consists of furnishing and installing or maintaining signs and posts and associated materials and hardware. The Contractor shall reinstall or replace any signs or markers that are removed or damaged during construction. Place signs and markers in the exact locations that they were removed from at the same height.

Item 981.01 Seeding and Mulching – This work consists of preparing seedbeds and furnishing and placing required seed and mulch. The contractor shall seed all disturbed soil outside of the trail tread by hand or mechanical spread.

SEEDING RECOMMENDATIONS

In wildland areas where short-term erosion potential is low and native understory integrity is critical, a Native Warm Season Grass mix may be used during the following season.

Native Warm Season Grass Panting Dates:

April 1 – June 15

3 lbs Big bluestem or little bluestem and 2 lbs Yellow Indian grass or switchgrass Plus 15 lbs browntop millet for nurse crop Plant shallow (1/4” or less)

For general erosion control use the following default mixes by season (all rates are per acre):

February 1 – March 31

15 lbs partridge pea

*Moderate to high erosion potential: Add 10 lbs Annual Ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) to mix.

April 1 – August 31

25 lbs brown top millet 20 lbs iron-clay cowpeas 10 lbs grain sorghum OR 3 lbs black oil sunflower

September 1 – November 30

50 lbs winter wheat

50 lbs oats

10 lbs crimson clover (inoculated) OR 2 lbs Ladino clover (inoculated)

December 1 to January 31

Use mulch at the recommended rate (see below).

On moderate to steep slopes or where erosion potential is high broadcast clean straw

(wheat, barley, or other grain) mulch at 2-3 inches deep over disturbed area (or one 74 pound bale per 800 square feet). On severe slopes secure mulch with punching, netting, or matting.

Seedbed preparation will involve harrowing, disking, or ripping on loading decks, haul roads, primary skid trails and other areas of compacted, exposed soils. Ripping to depth of 6 inches or greater maybe necessary due to soil compaction. The decision to select listed optional seed varieties is a Forest Service prerogative.

All plantings include 350 lbs of 13-13-13 fertilizer per acre (or rate equivalent) except Native Warm Season

Grass plantings.

Activity: Method of Measurement: Measurement for this activity will be made by the Acre.

Payment shall be made after the inspection and acceptance of work.

Pay Item 983.01

Removal of Structures and Obstructions – Work consists of removal and disposal of existing material within the trailway, above or below ground. The contractor shall remove and dispose all existing asphalt on both trails off of National Forest lands.

Activity: Method of Measurement: Measurement for this activity will be made by the Lump Sum.

Payments shall be made after the inspection and acceptance of work.
