About this file
This document contains questions and responses regarding the federal contract opportunity for the BIGHORN NF Greybull Work Center Barracks Roof Replacement. The roof replacement project involves replacing roof decking on the original building with new 1x6 tongue and groove planking and replacing roof decking on the addition with new 5/8 inch OSB sheeting. Larger 6 inch gutters and 3x4 inch downspouts are recommended to properly handle drainage from the large metal roof. Clarification is provided that fascia work refers to removing the existing metal fascia wrap and rewrapping with new 24 gauge metal. Rake flashing rather than step and counter flashing should be installed where the roof meets vertical walls. Trim pieces should also be 24 gauge.

Quesons and Responses for Greybull Roof Replacement

As of 9/12/2023
1. The specs call for 4” aluminum guters. To put this in perspecve, praccally ALL residenal roofing is done with at least 5” guters and 2”x3” downspouts. This is a very large roof and it will be metal as well. In order to handle the watershed from a roof that is over 4 mes the average residenal home, no less than a 6” guter should be used as well as a larger 3”x4” downspout. The guters should be 6” with 3”x4” downspouts. The note on the roofing typical detail sheet (sheet 6) which calls out for 4” guters is in error.
2. The specs call for the replacement of fascia. The term “fascia” is a very broad term and needs to be defined.
a. Does it mean merely to wrap the exisng fascia with 24 gauge metal? OR…. The fascia work item refers to removing the exisng metal fascia wrap and rewrapping with new 24 gauge metal.
b. Does the exisng fascia need to come off and then the sub-fascia be wrapped with metal. OR…
c. Is the exisng fascia going to be removed and replaced with wood fascia, mdf or some other facsimile there of? OR…
d. Is there even sub-fascia on the building at this me? If so… what size? Is it the right size to fit stock metal fascia wrap or…will it require a special bend to accommodate.
3. The specs call for BOTH “step flashing and counter flashing” along where the slopes of the roof meet the wall. Step flashing is only used in the applicaon of shingles and not metal to use BOTH step and counter flashing for this applicaon doesn’t make sense. Counter and step flashing as called out for in note 3 on sheet 4 should read “Install rake flashing where roof meets vercal wall”. Note 5 on sheet 5 should also read “Install rake flashing where roof meets vercal wall”.
4. The specs call for 24ga PBR. Do the trim pieces need to be 24 ga as well? Yes, trim pieces should also be 24 gauge.
5. Is the current roof decking tongue and groove? The replacement calls for 5/8" decking. The roof decking on the original building is 1”x6” tongue and groove planking. The roof decking on the addion (East Elevaon) is 5/8” OSB. Sheathing replacement is an Actual Quanty pay item and replacement material will be in kind, either solid planking or 5/8” sheet material depending on where the material is needed.
