About this file

This document outlines notes from a pre-bid site visit for the Timber Creek Horse Camp Reconstruction project on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest's Ely Ranger District. Key project details include the replacement of an existing cattle guard and installation of new single-family camp shelter units measuring 16'6" by 16' posts. The project also involves removing existing fire rings, concrete pads, and an old waterline. Bidders should account for specifications regarding pipe zone material, compaction, and density testing given the rocky terrain. The Department of Agriculture Forest Service is the contracting agency, with a bid due date of July 29, 2022. The pre-bid site visit provided an opportunity for contractors to observe existing conditions and infrastructure that would impact their proposals for the reconstruction and renovation of the Timber Creek Horse Camp facilities.

We walked the project area and saw all the features of the project. Comments on specific features observed are as follows: The old cattleguard will be removed and salvaged and a new cattleguard will be installed at a different location as shown in the plans. If location of fence installation is in very rocky area a rock cairn may be constructed instead of an H brace. Shelters shall be single family units 16’-6” x 16’ posts to posts o.c. with 20’ x 20’ roof dripline. A known distributor of this product is RCP Shelters. The private historic waterline shall not be disturbed. Existing fire rings and concrete pads in existing sites will be removed by the Forest Service. The ground is very rocky. The existing borrow pit may be used for rock disposal. The specifications for pipe zone material, compaction, and density testing are important for this project and bid proposals should reflect consideration of this fact. A clearance of 5 feet each side of centerline shall be allowed for the waterline trench (per specification 311000 3.5 c. Fire restrictions may happen on the district and a construction exemption may be allowed. The Ely Ranger District rarely goes into fire restriction, however. We observed the existing water system parts and locations of old and new pressure reducing valve locations. The existing bathrooms exterior shall be painted. The inside does not need to be painted.
