About this file
This document outlines specifications for a motorcycle purchase by the Department of Agriculture Forest Service. The Forest Service seeks to purchase two off-road motorcycles to facilitate timber sale activities across steep and rugged terrain above 9,000 feet in elevation on the Manti-La Sal National Forest. The motorcycles must have specifications well-suited to riders of varying experience levels and physical abilities operating in an off-road environment without developed trails, including a full-size frame with lower seat height of 35.8 inches or less, minimum 290cc liquid-cooled two-stroke engine, electronic oil injection, adjustable suspension, ground clearance of 12.6 inches or greater, and other features to provide power delivery, stability, and rider control over difficult terrain. Suitable motorcycle models identified are the 2023 Beta Xtrainer or models from Gas Gas, KTM, and Husqvarna that could meet needs with a sufficient lowering kit.

UNIT 0410 – Motorcycle (2) Fleet Addition Request Specifications NEED: To facilitate timber sale activities in designated roadless areas (IRA) across complex terrain on the Manti-La Sal National Forest. This terrain is nearly all above 9,000ft in elevation, has no developed roads or trails, and contains slopes up to and sometimes greater than 50%. Riders could be: advanced but short, or amateur and developing skill sets, or advanced but older. These types of riders will use this machine to traverse, climb and maneuver steep side hills containing logging slash/debris and often without any developed trail. Specifications will have ergonomics and features that increase rider capability and safety while operating off developed roads/trails or on heavy use skid (logging equipment) trails. It is the combination of machine characteristics rather than the individual specifications, that aids in facilitating proper ratios between power delivery, rider capability, and rider body type. For proper performance (leading to a safer ride) the combination of specifications such as power, technology, suspension, and ergonomics must be carefully adhered to.

Adherence Explanations A Full-sized bike that has a lower seat height (35.8” max) will give riders that are short, older, or less experienced greater control while maintaining the greater more controllable power delivery necessary for traversing technical terrain.
A 2 stroke motor will provide time proven reliability and lower maintenance costs while Electronic oil injection will provide simplicity in fuel control and insure that “wrong fuel” issues do not happen.
The Exhaust power valve adjustor (thumb leaver) and Power delivery map switch (located on handlebar) give the rider increased control of power delivery and allow the rider a better (and safer) way to control how much “go” makes it to the tire. This makes for a much more controlled and safe ride in technical terrain.
Full sized tires (Front rim - 21” and Rear rim - 18”) give the rider vastly more control and stability vs smaller counterparts and when combine with Soft enduro tires allows the rider to travers a wide range of terrain and obstacles.
Like any job specific equipment, it is the combinations of characteristics rather than an individual specification that make the most difference. Further, these features together aid a trained rider in maintaining the high, smooth, and immediate power delivery necessary to travers technical terrain with multiple obstacles in a safer and more reliable ride.
Selected options:
· Bark busters/hand guards
Bikes we feel meet these specifications (and our need):
· 2023 Beta Xtrainer Bikes we feel could meet our needs if a sufficient lowering kit and installation was included:
· Gas Gas EX 350F
· KTM 350 XC-F
· Husqvarna FX 350
· Beta RR R.E.
