About this file
This document contains Benthic Macroinvertebrate Bioassessment Reports from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Water Quality Control Division. The reports present water quality assessment data collected from multiple sampling stations along the Rio Grande River and Saguache Creek during August 2023.
Five bioassessment reports detail sampling results from four distinct locations: Rio Grande River mainstem above Rio Grande Reservoir (RIO-2, MMI: 40.8), Rio Grande River mainstem near Hogback Mountain (RIO-4, MMI: 70.7), Rio Grande River mainstem at Palisade Campground (RIO-7 with duplicate sample RIO-7 DUPE, MMI: 63.8 and 45.1 respectively), and Saguache Creek mainstem below confluence of S. Saguache Creek (SAG-1, MMI: 72.0). All sites received a "Not Reference or Degraded" status classification. Each report includes Multimetric Index Model results measuring various aquatic macroinvertebrate metrics such as Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera taxa counts; intolerant taxa percentages; coleoptera percentages; clinger and predator taxa; and scraper percentages. Sample sizes ranged from 284 to 346 total individuals. Water temperatures recorded during August sampling ranged from 10.33°C to 13.4°C. The reports document ecological condition assessments based on benthic macroinvertebrate community composition, a standard environmental monitoring methodology for evaluating stream health and aquatic ecosystem quality.
