About this file
This is a Detailed Information Sheet for the 2026 OCH NCT and Piling project, outlining forestry treatment specifications across multiple vegetation management units.
The project encompasses 436 total acres (174 acres in the Dome units and 262 acres in the Slot units) requiring forest thinning and piling operations. All units follow a standard leave tree species preference in descending order: Western Larch (WL), Ponderosa Pine (PP), and Douglas Fir (DF) free of mistletoe. Maximum cut tree diameters are generally 9 inches DBH (Diameter at Breast Height), with Western Juniper cuts up to 21 inches DBH unless exhibiting old growth characteristics or nest cavities. Spacing requirements vary between 20x20 and 24x24 feet. All units require removal of Douglas-fir or Western Larch with mistletoe (DMR 1+) up to 12 inches DBH, Grand Fir and Lodgepole Pine up to 9 inches DBH, and non-old growth Western Juniper up to 21 inches DBH. Special prescriptions address riparian habitat areas (RHCAs), including stream channels and non-channel features (springs/seeps), with restricted thinning zones ranging from 0-50 feet from channels and 0-20 feet from wetted edges. Seasonal restrictions vary by unit, with Dome units restricted March 1–August 31 or specific dates, and Slot units restricted December 1–May 1 with additional March 1–August 1 restrictions for certain units. Wildlife protection measures include surveys for calving elk (May 15–June 30), elk wallows during rutting season (September 1–October 15), and gray wolf denning/rendezvous sites (April 1–July 15), with activity buffers of 0.25 miles for wallows and one mile for wolf dens. Additional considerations include protection of Mountain Mahogany and Aspen within specified distances, fence preservation, spring protection, and connectivity corridor preservation in unit Dome 142.

All Units:
Cut any Douglas-fir or Western Larch with mistletoe (DMR 1+) that are 1 foot tall up to 12 inch DBH.
Stream channel RHCAs 0 - 5 feet from channel - No thinning except for juniper 5 - 25 feet from channel - Fell trees towards channel and leave cut trees whole. No equipment allowed.
25 - 50 feet from channel - Portions of felled trees that are within 25 feet of channel may be left whole. Remainder of tree outside 25 feet to be piled.
0 - 50 feet from channel - No piles located within 50 feet of channel. Material within 25 - 50 feet shall be piled outside of the 50 foot zone Non-channel RHCAs (springs/seeps) - 0 - 5 feet from wetted edge - No thinning except for juniper 5 - 20 feet from wetted edge - Fell towards spring/seep and leave whole. No piles, no equipment allowed
5/ Seasonal Restriction: No work in units during listed dates.
Project activities in riparian areas (e.g. RHCAs, hardwood stands) that begin during calving season (May 15-June 30) would require surveys prior to implementation to determine if calving elk are present. If calving elk are present, project activities would be postponed until completion of calving season.
Dome 142 - Unthinned clumps to be left in shaded area in southern portion of unit.
Aspen: if encountered, cut and leave whole all conifers up to 9" DBH within 50 ft of live aspen 1" DBH and larger.
3/ Cut all Western Juniper from 1' tall to 21 inch DBH unless it has old growth characteristics or a nest cavity.
4/ Stream specifications:
Cut all Grand Fir and all Lodgepole Pine up to 9" DBH.
1/ Leave Tree Species Preference for all Units in Decending Order: Western Larch (WL), Ponderosa Pine (PP), Douglas Fir (DF) free of misteltoe. Trees over 9" DBH shall be included in the leave tree spacing.
2/ Max cut tree DBH unless it is a tree with mistletoe or within RHCA special prescription area. When practicable trees would be felled away from fences and spring developments. When fences or spring developments are damaged by tree felling or during the removal of trees by equipment, full repair would be completed as part of the final contract work.
Cut all non-old growth Western Juniper up to 21" DBH.
Project activities that begin during rutting season (September 1-October 15) would require surveys prior to implementation to determine if any wallows are present. If wallows are located, they would be flagged and no activities would be permitted within 0.25 miles of the wallow during the rutting season. If an active gray wolf den or rendezvous site is discovered, the site would be flagged and no activities would be permitted within one mile of an active den or rendezvous site from April 1st to July 15th.
If calving elk, wolf denning or wolf rondezvous sites are found additional restrictions may be
