About this file
This Statement of Work (SOW) details the Missoula Fire Sciences Laboratory's acquisition of heat flux transducers for fire behavior research. The laboratory requires 2 water-cooled and 2 non-water-cooled heat flux transducers, each with total and radiant capabilities. Specific technical requirements include the ability to measure heat flux separately, withstand temperatures up to 400°F, have a linear output signal with maximum nonlinearity of ± 3%, and feature a sapphire window radiant sensor. The transducers must be smooth-bodied, 1" in diameter, and without flanges to fit existing hardware. Delivery is limited to Monday-Friday, 0800-1600, at the Missoula, Montana facility, with a desired performance period of as soon as possible, potentially taking up to six months. The procurement is part of a small business set-aside solicitation (Number 1240BG25Q0037) issued by the USDA Forest Service, with quotes due by July 25, 2025.

ACQUISITION STATEMENT OF WORK
Missoula Fire Sciences Laboratory 5775 US Hwy 10 West Missoula, MT 59808
TITLE: Heat Flux Transducer Acquisition
OBJECTIVES STATEMENT:
Our team needs more heat flux transducers. Heat flux transducers or gauges are highly calibrated sensors that allow us to measure quantities of heat energy being transferred.
BACKGROUND:
These instruments are used frequently to conduct experiments in fire behavior and are a critical part of subprojects that influence and guide research activities within fire behavior study. Additional sensors are needed for scheduled projects to measure the amount of heat that a fuel sample is experiencing from one of our custom built burners, or to evaluate heat output of an advancing fire in a needlebed for two examples.
DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES OR PRODUCT/TASKS:
2 Water cooled heat flux transducers with total and radiant capabilities 2 non water cooled heat flux transducers with total and radiant capabilities
REQUIREMENTS:
All heat flux transducers must have capabilities to measure radiant as well as total heat flux separately and be able to withstand body temperatures up to 400 F. Output signal must be linear with a maximum nonlinearity of ± 3%. The radiant sensor should be behind a sapphire window to focus on the relevant wavelengths. The heat flux transducers should be smooth bodied, without a flange and 1” in diameter.
No view restriction is necessary. The size, and being unthreaded (smooth) without a flange is very important for fitting into our existing hardware, and simplifying the design process for new applications.
The water cooled transducers should be capable of withstanding total heat fluxes of up to 200 kW/m3 and non water cooled transducers should be capable of withstanding total heat fluxes up to 150 kW/m3.
DELIVERABLES:
2 water cooled heat flux transducers with total and radiant capabilities 2 non water cooled heat flux transducers with total and radiant capabilities
