About this file

This document contains a set of questions and answers related to a federal contract opportunity for an ATV. The key details are:

The government will not consider expanding the service radius beyond 100 miles around Thorne Bay, unless the vendor agrees to cover the shipping costs to and from Juneau. Transporting the ATV from Thorne Bay to Juneau would be burdensome and costly for the government, as there are no direct ferry services and the barge line costs approximately $708 per direction. There are vendors located within the 100-mile radius that could reduce travel costs significantly, with the estimated cost of transporting the ATV to Ketchikan being $30 plus the 50-mile drive from Thorne Bay. The government does not wish to incur the additional costs associated with transporting the ATV to Juneau.

1. Service availability is extremely limited when only allowing a 100 mile radius around Thorne Bay. Would the government consider service availability in a 200-250 mile radius? This would allow for Juneau to be encompassed in the service radius.

No, unless there is a written agreement that the vendor will cover shipping costs to and from Juneau. There are no ferry services that directly travel from Thorne Bay to Juneau, a separate ferry would have to be utilized after a 50 miles drive from Thorne Bay to Hollis. Then it would require another set of FS employees to intercept the machine in Ketchikan from the Inner Island Ferry and place it on the Alaska Marine Hwy up to Juneau. This would be burdensome and not a cost the Gov. wishes to take on. The other option for transporting from Thorne Bay to Juneau is a barge line which comes as a cost of approximately $708 per direction. There are vendors located within 100 miles that would reduce travel costs tremendously. The Estimated cost of transporting the ATV to Ketchikan is $30 plus the 50 mile drive from Thorne Bay.
