About this file
This document is a specifications sheet for a Bruker Innova atomic force microscope (AFM) required by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) United States Horticultural Research Laboratory (USHRL) for their research on natural biopolymers from citrus processing waste. The key technical requirements include lateral force microscopy, contact and tapping imaging modes, ability to analyze hydrogels, coatings, and films, and liquid imaging capabilities. The AFM is to be purchased directly from Bruker and delivered to the USHRL facility in Fort Pierce, Florida. The period of performance is not specified. The government will provide access to the facility during normal business hours and a location for delivery. Award will be made on a best value basis considering technical specifications and price.
The related federal contract opportunity is a combined synopsis/solicitation (Solicitation Number 12405B24Q0214) for an Atomic Force Microscope, under NAICS code 334516. Quotes are due by June 5, 2024 at 4:00pm Central Standard Time. The government anticipates awarding a firm fixed price contract. Vendors must provide technical specifications and pricing information, and have satisfactory past performance to be eligible for award.

SPECIFICATIONS
Bruker Innova atomic force microscope (AFM), FY24
1. Introduction: Scientists at the United State Horticulture Research Laboratory (USHRL) are developing scientific information and new technology to solve high priority problems for the US fruit and vegetable growers and food processing industries. The goal of our research group is to advance value-adding technologies for juice processing co-products.
One of the projects is to utilize natural biopolymers recovered from citrus processing waste. The project needs an atomic force microscope (AFM) to study the structure-function relationships of pectin and other natural polymers. AFM allows imaging of complexes in their natural environment, which is impossible with any other method. It enables multidimensional analysis of hydrogels, coatings, and films, revealing substructural organizations invisible to conventional electron microscopy. Our research facility does not have an AFM yet. AFM will take our research to a new level.
The Bruker Innova® AFM is a compact AFM designed for laboratory use. It delivers application flexibility for the most demanding scientific research at a moderate cost.
2. Scope: The Bruker Innova AFM system shall be purchased directly from Bruker.
3. Technical Requirements: an AFM capable of multidimensional analysis of hydrogels, coatings, and films, revealing substructural organizations of polymers. The measurement and imaging can be conducted in air or in liquid.
Specifications: The Bruker Innova® AFM has a Lateral Force Microscopy, with Contact and Tapping imaging modes, accepts samples up to 45mm by 45mm and 18mm thick. Its unique closed-loop scan linearization system ensures accurate measurements. The configuration includes a controlling computer, NanoDrive v8.07r1 software for data acquisition and NanoScope Analysis Software Package to support image analysis in real-time. The configuration also includes Liquid Imaging to enable the measurement of liquid samples.
