Date: June 11, 2019 To: Dr. Ricardo Goenaga, Karla Agurto From: Mike Winterstein Subject: Scope of Work for Sites to be Pruned by Contractors Areas listed by priority (?):
WB2-FTBG- Rows 1 through 4:
Scope: The WB2-FTBG planting consists of unique germplasm cultivars of Mangferia indica (mango), Pouteria sapote (mammey), Pouteria campechiana (canistel), Psidium guajava (guava), Manilkara sapote (sapodilla), and Mammea americana. Each cultivar is unique to the National Plant Germplasm System. Hurricane Irma, which struck in September of 2017, toppled many trees throughout the station, the first four rows of WB2-FTBG has multiple trees still down, vines growing over tree canopies, and weed trees (Brazilian pepper). The first four rows consist of 87 trees on approximately one acre.
The contractor will prune all limbs lower than six feet from ground level, using hand clippers (to minimize damage to trees) any vines at the tree trunk at ground level, remove any weed trees in the rows (these will be flagged with marking tape), and all debris will be move to the debris pile in WB3. All limbs, except one two to three vertical limbs will be removed from any downed trees to encourage regrowth of new canopy.
W2-2- terrace of Room D (next to Building 53 - GALS) Scope: W2-2- terrace of Room D planting consists of Persea americana (avocado), Dimocarpus longan (longan), Eriobotrya japonica (loquat), palms, and Zamia species. There is a wall separating the terrace of Room D with another smaller room inside Room D. In the smaller room is a large legume that has partially fallen and is propped up on one of the rooms walls. The area is approximately a quarter acre with about a dozen trees. There are vines covering a good portion of the trunks and canopy of most of the trees. The Zamias and palms are clustered northwest corner of the terrace.
The contractor will remove the downed legume, prune all limbs lower than six feet from ground level, using hand clippers (to minimize damage to trees) any vines at the tree trunk at ground level, remove any weed trees (these will be flagged with marking tape), and all debris will be move to the debris pile in WB3. Care will be taken not to damage any of the Zamia or palm plantings (area will be taped off).
W3-3 – next to Building 86 – insectary Scope: This section has two large Ficus species and a large clump of bamboo next to Building 86. The bamboo is approximately 20 feet tall and encompasses about 60 square feet at ground level.
The contractor will prune all limbs lower than six feet from ground level, using hand clippers (to minimize damage to trees) any vines at the tree trunk at ground level, and all debris will be move to the debris pile in WB3. The bamboo will be cut back to half the size at ground level.
S1-4 – Bamboo Scope: S1-4-08-16 and S1-4-08-17 have extremely large clumps of Dendrocalamus strictus (bamboo). Each plot has overgrown its original plot and each clump is approximately 30 feet tall and 60 square feet at ground level.
The bamboo will be cut back to half the size at ground level. All debris will be move to the debris pile in WB3.
E3-2 – Bamboo Scope: E3-2-06-6.5 has an extremely large clump of Bambusa tuldoides (bamboo), some of which is partially out of the ground. The plot has overgrown its original plot and is approximately 20 feet tall and 30 square feet at ground level.
The bamboo will be cut back to half the size at ground level. All debris will be move to the debris pile in WB3.
WC3-Meritt Island Saigon (mango) Scope: The Merritt Island Saigon tree at WC3-08-10 has created a dense canopy growing down to ground level. The canopy is covered with vines and many weed trees (Brazilian pepper) are growing under the canopy. The area around the tree has been trenched in the past and remnants of the trenches surround the area.
The contractor will prune all limbs lower than six feet from ground level, using hand clippers (to minimize damage to trees) any vines at the tree trunk at ground level, remove any weed trees in the rows (these will be flagged with marking tape), and all debris will be move to the debris pile in WB3.
WF2 – Wild Tamarind Scope: Approximately five acres was planted with Lysiloma latisiliquum (wild tamarind) in the 1980’s to shade the coffee collection. The coffee collection was lost due to freezes in the late 1980’s but the wild tamarind remain. There are approximately 40 trees. Most trees are about twenty feet high with sprawling limbs as long 15 feet. Some of the trees have partially fallen and are being propped up by another tree. The area also has some volunteer palms and weed trees.
The contractor will prune all limbs lower than six feet from ground level, using hand clippers (to minimize damage to trees) any vines at the tree trunk at ground level, remove any weed trees and palms, and all debris will be move to the debris pile in WB3. Any trees that are down will be severely pruned to the root ball.
