Statement of Work
The 143 acres to be treated occur in five (5) work areas located on the Washburn Ranger

The following applies to all brushing locations:
• Brush removal (sub-merchantable tree and shrub cutting) and individual tree release of existing mature pine. Mechanically treat sub-merchantable trees and shrubs. Mechanical treatment will consist of brush saws and/or chain saws. Target tree and shrub species to be cut include aspen, birch, hazelnut, maple, oak, and willow.
• All living or dead aspen, birch, hazelnut, maple, oak, and willow trees less than 6 inches DBH
(diameter at breast height) and taller than 3 feet are to be cut to a stump height of less than
6 inches tall as measured from the ground to the height of the cut stem.
• All cut trees are to be directionally fell away from the trunk of adjacent mature (> 6-inch
DBH) pine and oak trees if present. The cut tree shall not be on top of or otherwise positioned over reserved mature pine or oak.
• Mature trees occurring in the work area (6-20” + diameter) are not to be cut.
• Single and small clumps of pine trees (jack, red, and white) occurring in the work area, regardless of diameter, are not to be cut.
• Other species to reserve and not cut, where possible, include cherry and serviceberry.
• Annuals such as grasses, sedges and ferns are not required to be cut.
• The perimeter of each work area will be delineated on the ground with pink flagging prior to treatments beginning.
General Description of Work Areas: Savanna and Open Barrens (not planted) – Throughout the area there are scattered pockets and individual pine (jack, white, and red pine). Most of the work areas are on rolling terrain and covered with young aspen, birch, hazelnut, maple, oak, and willow in the 1–5-inch DBH size class and approximately 4-15 feet tall. Portions of this work area are densely covered with young aspen and oak with some trees over 5-inch DBH.
