About this file
This document contains technical specifications for the procurement of a Conviron model PGC-Flex plant growth chamber.
The acquisition requires a plant growth chamber with a minimum growing area of 5 m² and minimum growing height of 432 mm. The chamber must feature a programmable temperature range from -5°C to +40°C with ±0.5°C control precision, programmable light intensity of at least 500 micromoles/m²/s with balanced spectrum and supplemental far red lighting, and humidity control up to 85% relative humidity with ±3% precision. The procuring organization specifies that the acquisition must be limited to a Conviron PGC-Flex-3 model to maintain scientific integrity and statistical validity, as it must match an existing Conviron PGC-3 growth chamber to enable concurrent experiments using a completely random statistical design rather than repeated measures design. Using two identical chambers simultaneously will improve statistical power and reduce the required mean separation threshold by 20% compared to sequential experiments with a single chamber, and will avoid an additional 25% loss of statistical power from chamber design variations.
The minimum technical specifications include internal dimensions of at least 97" W × 30.5" D with adjustability between single or multi-tier (2 or 3) configurations, minimum height of 14" per tier in three-tier mode, LED lighting of 500 micromoles/m²/s with broad spectrum and supplemental far red in multi-tier configuration, water-cooled condensing unit with hot gas bypass system for continuous compressor operation, and specific airflow requirements: vertical airflow via centrifugal impellers in single-tier configuration and horizontal airflow distributed uniformly from a back wall plenum in multi-tier configuration.

Conviron model PGC-Flex Plant Growth Chamber Technical Specifications
The acquisition involves procuring a plant growth chamber with a minimum of 5 m2 of growing area and a minimum growing height of 432 mm. With a programable temperature range of -5 C to +40 C with temperature control +/- 0.5 C. Programmable light intensity needs to be at least 500 micromoles/m2/s with a balanced spectrum for plant growth including supplemental far red. Humidity control up to 85% relative humidity with +/- 3% precision.
The acquisition of a growth chamber must be limited to a Conviron PGC-Flex-3 plant growth chamber to maintain scientific integrity by matching an existing adjustable 3-shelf growth chamber. We have an existing Conviron-PGC-3 growth chamber and need to be able to run concurrent experiments that are statistically comparable. With one growth chamber applying different treatments requires running consecutive experiments that need to be compared using a repeated measures ANOVA vs a completely random design. The use of two growth chambers at the same time will allow for a completely random statistical design. The use of a repeated measures design will result in needing a 20% larger mean separation compared to a completely random design. The loss of statistical power due to different chamber design and construction would lead to an even larger loss of statistical power resulting in need for an even larger mean separation of almost 25%. Thus, the need to duplicate the existing growth chamber is a need to achieve the scientific mission.
In addition, the Conviron PGC-Flex meets the following minimum specifications:
Minimum specifications:
• Internal dimensions equal to or greater than 97” W x 30.5” D with flexibility to adjust between single or multi (2 or 3) tier configurations
• Minimum height of 14” for each tier in three tier mode • Minimum lighting requirements:
500 micromoles/m²/s each with broad spectrum LED and supplemental far red in multi-tier configuration
• Temperature Range: -5°C to +40°C lights on/off. +/- 0.5°C
• Water-cooled condensing unit with hot gas bypass system for continuous compressor operation and close temperature control
• Airflow requirements: 1) chambers must provide vertical airflow when in single tier configuration provided by centrifugal impellers that direct air uniformly upward through perforated chamber floor; and 2) chambers must provide horizontal airflow over each tier when in multi-tier configuration distributed uniformly from a back wall air distribution plenum.
The new growth chamber must be exactly matched to an existing growth chamber to meet exact needs related to experimental design so that no additional degrees of freedom are lost when used in conjunction with the existing growth chamber.
