About this file

This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for a Manual Vertical Knee Mill requested by the USDA Forest Service's Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) Research Facilities Engineering (RFE) Department. The key technical requirements for the mill include: R-8 collet with power draw bar, power feed for X/Y/Z axis, digital readouts, 5hp 220v 3-phase motor, table dimensions of 10"x55", minimum 18" table to spindle-nose height, ability to accept 90-degree cutter head and keyway cutter/slotter attachments, and spindle runout no greater than 0.0002 TIR. The mill must be delivered by August 29, 2024 and will be installed and operated by FPL machinist personnel only. This SOW is associated with a Federal Contract Opportunity for a sole source acquisition of the specified Manual Vertical Knee Mill from Republic Machinery Co. Inc. by the USDA Forest Service. The desired delivery date is August 1, 2024.

Project Manual Vertical Knee Mill

General Information

1.0 Scope of Work

The Forest Service (FS) Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) Research Facilities Engineering (RFE) Department is requesting the acquisition of a Manual Vertical Knee Mill to support the fabrication and repair of unique and complex equipment. The RFE is responsible for fabricating and maintaining complex scientific research equipment for both the Forest Service and the USGS, which regularly requires the ability to design and manufacture complex parts. The Manual Vertical Knee Mill must be equipped with an R-8 collet with a power draw bar, as well as having power feed for the X, Y, and Z axis. It must provide digital readouts for the position of all three axis. It must have a 5hp three phase electric motor, with a 0-4200rpm variable speed head. It must have minimum table dimensions of 10” deep by 55” wide. It must also have a minimum table to nose dimension of 18”. It must have the capability of accepting accessories, including both a 90-degree cutter head and a keyway cutter/slotter. It must use precision bearings for the spindle with a spindle runout no-greater-than .0002 TIR. It must must be available for delivery no-later-than August 29th, 2024. The machine must also have double square and dovetail knee guides to ensure precision machining and facilitate the repeatable manufacture of complex parts. The machine must be 3-phase, 220v electrical compatible. The machine must also meet lockout/tagout safety standards. These capacities and capabilities are necessary for the RFE to fabricate scientific fixtures and equipment efficiently and safely.

2.0 Background

Acquiring Manual Vertical Knee Mill will position the RFE to provide superior machining and fabrication abilities to better serve the FS, USGS, and all tenants of the FPL. The ability to utilize the precision accuracy and the keyway cutter attachments when milling precision machine parts will allow the RFE machinists to produce complex parts with exacting precision, on a repeatable basis. The benefits of this are reduced downtime and increased efficiency for the greater FPL.
