About this file
This document contains the specifications for snow plow cutting edges to be supplied to the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT). It covers three main types of cutting edges: carbide tip, rubber encased steel segments, and cushion mounted steel carbide blades. The specifications detail the material composition, dimensions, and performance requirements for each type of cutting edge, as well as special requirements such as brazing, interchangeability, and identification markings. The contract opportunity is for the delivery of these cutting edge blades throughout the state of South Dakota.
The specifications include detailed technical requirements for the carbide inserts, brazing process, steel components, and rubber encasement. Specific dimensional tolerances, hardness, density, and strength properties are provided. Bidders must provide certifications from the carbide insert manufacturer and submit blueprints of the cutting edge punching patterns. The complete cutting edge will consist of a combination of three interchangeable sections, and the difference between the highest and lowest tip points cannot exceed 1/32" on any blade assembly.

1. PLOW BLADE STEEL – RUBBER – CERAMIC – RUBBER – STEEL BLADE FOR UNDERBODY PLOWS
a. This specification covers a flexible snowplow blade system for underbody plows with ceramic inserts free-floating in vulcanized rubber with the configuration of STEEL- RUBBER-CERAMIC-RUBBER-STEEL. The product is designed for optimal operational and wear performance while minimizing vibration and noise. The wear component, in this case, special ceramic pieces or inlays, are designed to “float” within the vulcanized rubber, which helps to minimize the harsh impacts of the wear material with various obstacles encountered on the road surface. This configuration also helps the wear material to push into and better conform to the road surface's shape, thus providing better snow and ice cleaning – hence a “flexible blade system.”
