About this file

This document is a set of plans and specifications prepared by the City of New Haven Department of Engineering for the Rice Soccer Field Improvements project, located on English Drive in New Haven, Connecticut. The project involves turf improvements to an existing soccer field, including grading, aeration, seeding, and hydroseeding operations across the site. The specifications detail two primary turf improvement areas (Turf Improvement A and Turf Improvement B) with specific work sequences: mowing existing turf to one inch or less, filling low areas with sandy loam, aerating using a Verti-Drain 7316 with ten-inch solid tines, rolling with 300 to 1,000-pound machinery in two directions, and hydroseeding with a seed mixture of 70% tall fescue, 20% perennial ryegrass, and 10% Kentucky bluegrass at seven pounds per 1,000 square feet. The field dimensions are 305 feet by 180 feet, and contractors must remove and reinstall detectable corner markers at the four corners of the proposed field.

The contractor is responsible for complying with the City of New Haven's General Conditions and all applicable federal, state, and local laws and codes. Additional contractor obligations include submitting a Call Before You Dig (CBYD) request for utility locating prior to work commencement, marking existing irrigation heads, and repairing any damage to existing park elements including the irrigation system during construction. The city will provide access to the existing irrigation controller. Site preparation work includes sod removal to one-inch depth, rough grading one inch below final grades, addition of one inch of sand per CTDOT specifications, and tilling to six inches depth. All work must avoid soil saturation during grading, aeration, and tilling operations. An eight-foot fence and two ten-foot gates are to be installed by others prior to field improvements beginning.
