About this file

Rice University's Housing & Dining Department has issued a Request for Information (RFI) No. 2025-08-031 seeking AI-based food waste tracking solutions for its campus dining operations. The RFI aims to identify and evaluate technological solutions capable of tracking and analyzing food waste in high-volume dining environments, with an initial pilot implementation focused on two serveries serving up to 1,800 meals per day and potential expansion to all five residential serveries. The RFI was released on August 26, 2025, with responses due by September 8, 2025, at 5:00 PM Central Time. Potential vendors may be invited to provide optional online presentations between September 15-17, 2025, with a selection for pilot implementation expected by September 19, 2025.

The desired technology includes smart waste tracking scales, overhead ID cameras or sensors, predictive analytics dashboards, and API/data export tools, with an optional carbon emissions tracking component. Key requirements include compatibility with bulk production and self-service dining formats, ability to track waste by various parameters, real-time and historical dashboards, and potential integration with Culinary Digital. Rice will evaluate responses based on technical fit, operational usability, integration capabilities, security, pricing structure, sustainability features, higher education experience, and alignment with ISO requirements. The RFI emphasizes that this is an information-gathering exercise, and no awards will be made directly from this solicitation.
