About this file
This is a Purchase Description for a Metrology Furnace with part number ITL-M-17701, dated 29 September 2025 (Revision 0). The furnace will be used for calibration of Platinum Resistance Thermometers, annealing processes, and realization of Tin and Zinc Freeze Points. It must be compatible with existing AFPSL Isotech tin (ITL-M-17669) and zinc (ITL-M-17671) full-size freeze point cells, as well as the AFPSL annealing adapter (IsoTech 411-01-11).
Performance requirements specify a temperature range of 50 to 500 °C with display and operation in degrees Celsius. The furnace must feature a digital display showing all critical control and measurement parameters with high contrast, easily identifiable distinctions between set points and actual measured quantities, and front panel controls or touch screen access to all functions. Environmental operating and storage conditions are 60 to 90 °F and 10 to 90 percent relative humidity (non-condensing). The unit requires 208-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz power with user-serviceable AC line fuses and electrical safety documentation citing UL or ANSI standards. The contractor must supply all special hardware, software, licenses, and safety data sheets for any fluids or chemicals. The operator's manual must include individual component listings with OEM manufacturer names and part numbers, alignment procedures for temperature sensors, remote command listings, and preventative maintenance procedures. A warranty lasting at least one year from delivery and technical support normally offered by the vendor is required. Testing will be performed at a government-specified destination using test equipment traceable to NIST or other AFMETCAL-approved sources to verify all requirements are met. Data requirements include a complete user and service manual in iPDF format on CD/DVD-ROM complying with DID DI-TMSS-80527D and DD Form 1423, plus 2D engineering drawings in accordance with MIL-STD-31000B.

2.0 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:
2.1 Operations: The Metrology Furnace shall be part number ITL-M-17701. It shall be compatible with existing tin (ITL-M-17669) and zinc (ITL-M-17671) full-size freeze point cells. It shall be able to realize those fixed point cells for the calibration of Platinum Resistance Thermometers. It shall also be able to be used as an annealing furnace.
2.2 Units: The Metrology Furnace shall be able to display and operate with at least the following engineering units:
2.2.1 Temperature: °C
2.3 Range: The Metrology Furnace shall have a range of 50 to 500 °C
3.0 FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
3.1 Display: The screen shall display all critical control and measurement parameters that are essential to the operation of the Metrology Furnace. The display shall utilize easily-read fonts on a screen with high contrast between characters and background. Each parameter on the screen shall be easily identified and read. The display shall distinguish between ‘set points’ and ‘actual’ measured quantities. It shall be a digital display.
3.2 Front Panel Operation: The Metrology Furnace shall have controls or a touch screen on the front panel of the unit which shall provide access to all functions of the unit.
3.3 Annealing Adapter Compatibility: The Metrology Furnace shall be compatible with existing AFPSL annealing adapter (IsoTech 411-01-11).
3.4 Fixed Point Cell Compatibility: The Metrology Furnace shall be compatible with existing tin (ITL-M-17669) and zinc (ITL-M-17671) full-size freeze point cells .
4.0 MECHANICAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
4.1 Environmental Requirements: The Metrology Furnace shall be able to operate and be stored in the following environmental conditions without loss of required performance:
4.1.1 Temperature: 60 to 90 °F
4.1.2 Humidity: 10 to 90 %RH Non-condensing
4.2 Special Hardware/ Software/Licenses Requirements: Any special equipment, fixtures, tools, standards, etc., required to meet the requirements of this purchase description and not common to a secondary calibration laboratory must be supplied with the Metrology Furnace.
Units that fail calibration and are recommended for alignment or adjustment, either manually or using automated alignment/adjustment software, shall include any special hardware, software, and software licenses needed to perform the alignment/adjustment process.
4.3 Construction: The Metrology Furnace shall be designed and constructed of materials that meet the requirements of this specification and in accordance with the best commercial practices for industry approved equipment. It shall be the contractor’s responsibility to assure the government that such design objectives as reliability, accuracy of operation, maintainability and ease of operation have been given due consideration in the manufacture of this equipment. All parts such as shafts, bearings, regulators, switches, controls, connectors, etc., shall have proper clearance and adjustments. They shall work together so that the equipment shall supply the rated requirements without unnecessary strains, vibrations, and overheating. They shall be able to withstand the conditions met in shipping, storage, installation, and services. All materials and parts of this equipment shall be capable of withstanding environmental testing requirements of this specification.
4.4 Individual Unique Identifier Designation: The Metrology Furnace shall be clearly labeled with a model number, serial number, and manufacturer’s name. Unique item identification labeling shall follow Item Identification and Valuation requirements as stated in the contract.
