About this file

This document is a technical specification sheet for EPR-1 PRIME®, a chemical product used in road construction and infrastructure preparation. The document provides detailed guidelines for storage, mixing, loading, and application of the product, focusing on safety awareness, storage tank requirements, distributor loading procedures, and installation techniques for base or sub-base courses.

The technical specification outlines the precise dilution ratio of 1 gallon of EPR-1 PRIME® concentrate to 3 gallons of water, creating a 4-gallon ready-to-apply solution. The typical application rate is 0.20 gallons per square yard, with potential variance between 0.10 to 0.30 gallons depending on three key factors: base material gradation, traffic frequency and load, and anticipated exposure time. The document emphasizes the importance of proper base preparation, moisture content, and application technique to ensure optimal penetration and adhesion. Specific recommendations are provided for different base types, such as open/coarse graded versus closed/fine graded bases, with guidance on adjusting application rates to achieve the best results.

STORAGE, MIXING AND

APPLICATION

I. SAFETY AWARENESS

Material Safety Data Sheet should always be reviewed before handling any chemical product including EPR-1 PRIME®.

II. Storage Tanks

A. EPR-1 PRIME® concentrate can be stored in metal or plastic containers which are reasonably free of all residues, water, trash, other liquids, etc.

B. Storage tanks used to store

EPR-1 PRIME® should be leak-free and vented to equalize internal and external pressures.

C. Storage tanks should have a minimum of one two inch outlet with a valve and a quick-connect adapter.

D. EPR-1 PRIME® concentrate is a stable emulsion that does not require heat, agitation, or circulation to prevent separation during storage.

E. EPR-1 PRIME® concentrate cannot be froze at anytime during its storage.

III. Loading Distributor

A. The distributor truck or trailer should be reasonably clean of all residue, water, trash, other liquids, etc. before EPR-1 PRIME® concentrate is loaded.

B. One gallon of EPR-1 PRIME® concentrate must be diluted with three gallons of water to make four gallons of EPR-1 PRIME® ready to apply.

C. Accurate measurements and close adherence to the 3:1 dilution ratio is needed for a quality result.

D. To determine how many gallons of concentrate are needed when loading the distributor: Divide the gallon capacity of the distributor

(or total gallons needed if mixing less than a full load) by four. This amount is equal to one part and is the amount of concentrate needed to be loaded.

E. Load the determined amount of concentrate by using an in-line metering device or by filling to a calibration mark on the tank. (If filling to a certain calibration mark, be certain that the truck is on a level surface)

F. Load water by metering three times as many gallons as gallons of concentrate loaded. (Should be the remaining ¾ of the tanks capacity)

G. Insure that all hoses connections are leak free when loading. Suction of air into the concentrate can cause foam to form inside the distributor. This will reduce the amount of water that can be added without making a mess from foam overflow. Bottom loading is preferred to avoid foaming. If top loading, foaming can be avoided by submerging the discharge hose into the solution in the tank as it is being loaded.

H. No additional mixing or agitation is required. Agitation with air may cause foaming.

I. EPR-1 PRIME®, “ready to use”

(diluted) should be mixed by pump circulation if not used within seven days of mixing. Diluted material must be kept from freezing.

IV. Installation

A. The base or sub-base course should be graded and compacted to contract specifications. The moisture content of the base or sub-base material should be near or lower than optimum. Bases which are too wet may delay curing and reduce penetration of EPR-1

PRIME®. Bases that are too dry or have excess amount of dusty fines on the surface may experience

“frog or fish eyeing” a condition of poor penetration and low adhesion to the aggregate.

B. The typical application rate is

.20 gallons per square yard, although the following three factors can dictate a 50% variance in this rate to achieve a quality result.

1. Gradation of the base material to be primed is the factor that has the most impact on the application rate.

Open or course graded bases will generally require heavier application of ERP-1 PRIME® while closed or fine graded bases will generally require less. Open or coarse graded bases have air voids which allow greater penetration.

Larger quantities of EPR-1 PRIME® are needed to seal the voids and retain moisture in this type of base or sub-base. A recommended application rate for open base is .20 to .30 gallons per square yard.

Closed or fine graded bases do not have as many air voids, so less

EPR-1 PRIME® is needed to seal the surface.

Applying at a rate of .10 to .20 gallons per square yard is recommended for closed bases.

2. Traffic frequency, speed, and axle loads will determine the amount of wear the primed surface can endure. Application rates may need to be increased when heavy vehicles such as dump trucks, buses, tractor trailer trucks, etc. are prevalent. In lieu of increasing the application rate in the first application, the additional prime can be installed by applying more than one coat of EPR-1 PRIME® on an as needed basis. This two-coat method of application should decrease curing times on any single application, thus allowing traffic to be placed on the primed surface sooner than with a single heavy application.

3. The length of time the primed surface will be open to the elements of weather and traffic is also a factor in determining the best application rate. If the primed surface is anticipated to be covered within a few days, the application rate may be applied at the lower end of the typical application range.

If the open time becomes several weeks, another application, may be applied as needed.
