About this file

This document appears to be a technical specification sheet for C-23® Crack Sealer, a product manufactured by D & D Emulsions, Inc. The document provides detailed technical information about the application, properties, and usage of the crack sealing product for pavement maintenance.

The technical specification describes C-23® as a unique blend of slow-setting asphalt cement and virgin petroleum resins, designed for crack sealing, pothole treatment, and utility cut repairs. The product is free-flowing above 45°F, changes from dark brown to black during curing, and offers features such as creating a water-resistant seal, softening old asphalt cement, and improving bonding of patch materials. The document includes sections on sanding, longevity, pothole treatment, utility cut repairs, appearance, cleaning, technical service, and a warranty statement from D & D Emulsions, Inc. The specification emphasizes the product's ability to penetrate cracks, remain flexible through temperature cycles, and provide durable pavement repair solutions.

E. Sanding

Mounding dry, dirty sand over the filled crack provides protection from traffic until curing is complete.

Some of this sand becomes bonded with the C-23® and forced into the crack by traffic creating a tight water resistant seal. Excess sand is blown or washed away by traffic, wind and rain.

F. Longevity

The petroleum resin component of C-23® works to soften the old asphalt cement in the sidewall of the crack while coating the fine particles left in the crack. The fines bind to the sidewall to become part of the pavement. C-23® resins remain flexible through hot and cold cycles, allowing crack movement without loss of seal. When the crack movement is over ½”, a shallow hairline stress fracture will appear on the surface of the cured C-23®.

But because C-23® has penetrated, no water will enter to continue damage to sub-base.

G. Pothole Treatment

Coating the sides and bottom of potholes with C-23® before filling with hot or cold patching material improves bonding of the patch. This makes the difference between a

“temporary” and a “permanent” repair. Standing water should be removed before spraying, but it is not necessary that the surface be dry for C-23® to bond the old pavement with the new patch.

H. Utility Cut Repairs

Coating the sides of the cut pavement and the surface of the compacted backfill base material improves bonding of the hot or cold patching material when repairing a utility cut. After the compaction of the new asphalt patch, a light spray of C-23® to cover the perimeter of the joint prevents the intrusion of water.

V. Appearance

C-23® Crack Sealer is a unique blend of slow setting asphalt cement and virgin petroleum resins.

The dark brown color changes to black after the water breaks from the emulsion and curing begins. It is free-flowing above 45°F and has a slight asphalt odor.

VI. Cleaning

Should C-23® Crack Sealer get on curbs or other concrete structures, it can be removed by immediately using soap and water under pressure. If the emulsion breaks and the curing process begins it can be removed by using conventional removal methods such as sand blasting or industrial solvents.

Should C-23® Crack Sealer get on painted or other non-porous surfaces, use lanolin hand cleaners, mineral spirits, or other industrial solvents or cleaners to remove the resin.
