About this file
This document is a technical specification sheet for C-23® Crack Sealer, providing detailed instructions for storage, handling, and application of the product. The document does not appear to be a state or local contract, but rather a product usage guide that would potentially be referenced in infrastructure maintenance contracts.
The document provides comprehensive guidance on storing C-23® Crack Sealer in metal or plastic containers, with specific recommendations for bulk storage tanks and drum storage. It outlines installation procedures, emphasizing application temperatures (over 30°F, preferably between 36°F to 55°F), moisture considerations, and crack preparation techniques. The product can be applied using a pouring vessel or pressurized wand, with instructions to slightly overfill cracks and allow for traffic compression to complete the seal. Key technical details include the product's ability to work with minimal crack preparation, compatibility with slight moisture, and recommendations for pump types and cleaning procedures.

STORAGE AND
APPLICATION
I. SAFETY AWARENESS
Material Safety Data Sheet should always be reviewed before handling any chemical product including C-23® Crack Sealer.
II. Storage Tanks and Drums
A. C-23® Crack Sealer can be safely stored in metal or plastic containers which are reasonably free of all residue, water, trash, other liquids, etc.
B. Bulk storage tanks should have a minimum of one two inch outlet with a valve and a quick connect adapter to accept bulk delivery.
C. Bulk storage tanks used to store C-23® Crack Sealer should be leak free and vented to equalize internal and external pressures.
D. C-23® Crack Sealer is a stable emulsion that does not require heat, agitation, or circulation to prevent separation during storage.
E. C-23® Crack Sealer should
NOT freeze.
F. C-23® can be shipped and stored in drums as well as bulk.
III Loading C-23®
A. Any tank should be reasonably clean of all water, residue, trash, other liquids, etc.
before C-23® Crack Sealer is loaded.
B. C-23® may be transferred by any variety of pumps including trash pumps, gear pumps, impeller and diaphragm pumps.
C. Pumps should be flushed with water to remove residue after pumping C-23® to prevent clogging or sticking parts.
D. Petroleum solvents or asphalt release agents work well to remove
C-23® that has been left to dry on equipment, applicator tips, or painted surfaces.
IV. Installation
A. Temperatures
C-23® installs on any pavement that is over 30°F and free of ice. When using at low temperatures, C-23® must be kept warm enough
(45°F+) to flow and pump easily.
Sealing cracks in cool weather
(36°F to 55°F) is beneficial because the cracks are more open to accept material than during hot weather.
Also, the crack at this temperature is near midpoint in movement which lessens the extremes of extension or compression the crack filling material must absorb.
B. Moisture
Above 32°F, the presence of a little moisture in the crack will still allow good results because C-23® is an emulsion that likes water. Do not use when rain is threatening or when the road surface is wet.
C. Crack Preparation
Generally, no crack preparation is necessary when using C-23® on highways. The two exceptions are when cracks are packed full of debris to the level of the pavement and there is no room for the C-23®, or when the crack is so deep that a bottom must be added. In the first situation, remove the top ¼ inch of debris by scraping with a pointed tool or blowing with compressed air.
A crack that is seemingly
“bottomless” can be sealed by filling with sand to within a few inches of the surface and layering.
Fill crack with C-23® & sand to almost level and finish with C-23® on the top ½”, then mound a sand cover which will be packed by traffic, just like a typical crack.
When sealing cracks in parking lots or other low traffic areas, sometimes vegetation is growing – from a crack in the asphalt. In this situation the green matter should be first treated with herbicide and removed before sealing with C-23®.
D. Application
C-23® can be applied from a pouring vessel or by pressurized wand. Overfill the crack slightly so that C-23® forms a cap over the edges of the crack. It is not necessary to squeegee this surplus to form an over-band configuration although several crews have had good results with this technique.
The subsequent application of dirty sand and compression from traffic, complete the seal.
