About this file
This statement of work outlines requirements for a commercial thermochemical cleaning salt known as Kolene No. 6. The Anniston Army Depot requires four super sacks containing 2,000 pounds of Kolene No. 6 salt each month to be delivered to Building 474 for use in its molten salt bath cleaning system. The initial contract award would be for one year with four optional one-year extensions, allowing for a total five-year contract term. Kolene No. 6 salt is used in its anhydrous molten state at temperatures ranging from 500 to 750 degrees Fahrenheit to remove oils, greases, and other contaminants from engine components through thermochemical oxidation. The related federal contract opportunity is for the Anniston Army Depot's requirements for this Kolene No. 6 process chemical to support its molten salt bath operations.

Statement of Work
Kolene K6 Oxidizing Salt
1.0 SCOPE
1.1 This specification establishes the requirements for the cleaning material/chemical to be used in the Kolene Molten Salt Bath at Anniston Army Depot (ANAD). Kolene Salt No. 6 (K6) shall be purchased for use in the Kolene Molten Salt Bath. It is used in the Kolene Molten Salt Bath Cleaning system installed at the Powertrain Flexible Maintenance Facility (PFMF), Building 474.
1.2 Four (4) super sacks (2,000 lbs. each) shall be delivered to Anniston Army Depot on the 15th of each calendar month, for a grand total of 48 super sacks per year. If the 15th of the calendar month falls on Saturday, Sunday, ANAD regular off Friday, Federal Holiday, or Shutdown Period then delivery should be the next ANAD workday.
1.3 The performance period shall be a period of one calendar year beginning concurrently with the date of initial contract award. Subsequent option years may be individually exercised for the same monthly and yearly quantities for up to 4 additional years resulting in a possible 5-year total contract term.
2.0 INTENDED USE
2.1 Molten Salt Bath Operations: The anhydrous salt shall be used at existing facilities at ANAD. K6 is used in its anhydrous molten state as an oxidizing medium for the removal of oils, greases, organic materials, and coatings.
3.0 PROPERTIES
3.1 Chemical Composition: Trade Secret. See attached technical data sheet and
MSDS.
4.0 MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET: A MSDS must be provided with each shipment.
5.0 PACKAGING AND DELIVERY: Product is to be delivered via common carrier in 2,000 lb. super sacks on individual pallets delivered directly to Building 474 door 4W, once per month in quantities as required.
I. DESCRIPTION
Kolene® No. 6 salt is a grayish free-flowing granular material. It is used in its anhydrous molten state as an oxidizing medium for the removal of oils, greases, organic materials, and coatings by thermochemical oxidation. Ferrous and select nonferrous materials may be cleaned with Kolene No.

III. EQUIPMENT AND OPERATION
Only equipment specifically engineered for molten salts should be considered for containing and operating this product. Normal operating temperatures range from 260°C (500°F) to 399°C (750°F).
Required treatment times vary from a few seconds to several minutes, depending on the application, and the type and quantity of material to be removed.
IV. SAFETY AND HANDLING PRECAUTIONS
As with any high temperature process, proper training, safety equipment, and precautions are mandatory. Operating personnel should be provided with face shields and heat resistant gloves, not rubber or plastic coated.
Never introduce water or other liquids into a molten salt bath as the elevated temperature may cause violent evolution of gases, steam, and salt eruptions.
Sealed containers, fabricated assemblies, or other items which contain confined air or liquids should not be immersed in the molten salt because of possible explosion hazards resulting from internal pressure buildup.
Molten Product:
Kolene No. 6 salt contains caustic compounds, which are corrosive to the skin, and oxidizing compounds, which can support combustion under certain circumstances. All persons handling this product should be cautioned of these hazards. Personal protection equipment should be used at all times.
As-received Product:
V. STORAGE
Fresh Kolene No. 6 salt should be stored in a cool, dry, and secure area. Do not store near acids, or flammable or combustible materials. Partially full drums should be resealed tightly before storing to prevent absorption of moisture from the air.

KOLENE® KGC™
Technical Data Sheet
I: D E S C R I P T I O N
Kolene® KGC™ is a powdered concentrate that is mixed with water to form a working solution.
This solution is used for cleaning a broad range of metals and alloys including aluminum, cop-per, brasses, bronzes, stainless steels, precious and semi-precious metals, and many so-called exotic alloys. It will selectively remove light oxide films without substantial effect on the basis metal. Light soils and oil films are concurrently removed, eliminating the need for multiple cleaning stages. The solution has low inherent toxicity, and is relatively non-corrosive.
II: P H Y S I C A L D A T A
Appearance: white to cream colored, granular powder Odor: pleasant, faintly aromatic odor Solubility: essentially complete at recommended use levels;
solutions may be slightly hazy pH: 2.7 @ 100 gm/l @ 25°C (77°F)
III: S U I T A B L E E Q U I P M E N T
Because of KGC's non-corrosive character and low operating temperatures, almost any acid-resistant construction material may be used satisfactorily to handle and contain this compound.
300 series stainless steel, glass or enamelware, acid resistant brick, PVC, polypropylene, poly-ethylene, fluorinated polymers, nylon or rubber are among suitable materials. Although KGC does not evolve any objectionable fumes, it may be desirable to provide large heated tanks with an exhaust hood to remove water vapors formed at elevated temperature.
IV: O P E R A T I O N A L D A T A
Concentration: 100 - 200 gms/l (.75 lbs/gal to 1.75 lbs/gal) Temperature: 120°F - 160°F
While the above figures may be considered typical, KGC is usable over a broad range of condi-tions. The concentration may be varied from about 50 gm/l (less than 8 oz/gal) to about 300 gm/l (2.5 lbs/gal) depending upon the difficulty of soil and/or oxide removal. The temperature may range from normal room temperature to boiling. Immersion times can be a few seconds to an hour or longer, depending on the application. The use of electric current with KGC may as-sist in the removal of some difficult oxides; stainless steel oxide removal is enhanced by forming a galvanic couple with carbon steel while the components are immersed in the KGC solution.

KOLENE® KGC™
Technical Data Sheet
V: S A F E T Y and H A N D L I N G
Our experience with this product indicates that Kolene KGC possesses little or no toxicity. As with any chemical compound, excessive exposure and/or intimate contact should be avoided.
When handling this product, the use of rubber gloves and safety goggles is recommended. In case of skin or eye contact, flush the affected area thoroughly with fresh water and obtain prompt medical attention. Accidental ingestion of Kolene KGC in normal use is highly unlikely.
However, if it should occur, consult a physician. The ingredients in Kolene KGC are generally considered to be non-poisonous. Consult the Material Safety Data Sheet for complete product safety information before using KGC.
VI: S T O R A G E
Kolene KGC should be stored in a dry and secure area. Because KGC has a tendency to ab-sorb moisture, containers should be kept tightly closed when not in use. If caking should occur, the effectiveness of the KGC is not impaired. Extra care should be taken, however, to insure that all lumps are completely dissolved for use, and that proper precautions are taken to prevent splashing as the lumps are introduced into water.
Because KGC is an acidic material, storage conditions should prevent possible contact with in-compatible chemicals such as strong alkalis, cyanide compounds, etc. Use normal prudent judgement as you would when dealing with any acidic chemical product.
