About this file

This solicitation is seeking a 7 Tesla cryogen-free superconducting magnet with a Helium-3 Dipper Insert and a Dilution Refrigerator Insert. The National Institute of Standards and Technology requires the full system to include a cold-bore superconducting magnet, two sample positioners, one dilution refrigerator system with insert, one helium-3 dipper, and all necessary additional items to make turnkey systems. The system must be cryogen free and only require an initial helium gas charge. All circulation pumps must be oil-free. Temperature stability must be within 500 mK over the operating range. Control and communication interfaces must include RS-232, Ethernet, and IEEE-488.2. The contractor must meet additional technical requirements for the magnet system, dilution refrigerator, and helium-3 dipper as specified.

Statement of Work for 7T Vertical Field Magnet with Helium-3 Dipper and Dilution Refrigerator Insert Statement of Work for 7T Vertical Field Magnet with Helium-3 Dipper and Dilution Refrigerator Insert

Background The Department of Commerce and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have developed a major national facility for neutron scattering. The NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) is a user facility serving the needs of over 900 visiting researchers per year who come to perform neutron scattering experiments.

Measuring the magnetic field dependent properties of materials is a critical part of the NCNR mission, which often requires the use of liquid helium to cryogenically cool the magnet and the sample materials. Liquid helium is a non-renewable resource and the financial cost of using it is increasing every year. To operate more sustainably a transition to cryogen-free systems, i.e. “dry magnets” is desirable. Dry magnets use a closed-cycle refrigerator (CCR) to conductively cool the magnet coils, requiring no addition of any cryogens at any time during preparation, operation, or recovery from magnet quench. This sample environment equipment must operate with high reliability and accuracy across the wide range of instruments and sample measurement conditions, be simple and safe to operate, with safeguards to protect both the equipment and personnel during operation.

Purpose The objective of this procurement is to purchase one 7 Tesla cryogen-free superconducting magnet with a Helium-3 Dipper Insert and a Dilution Refrigerator Insert. This “Magnet System” will be used for sample environment operation at all appropriate neutron user instruments at the NCNR.

System Description The full system includes one cold-bore superconducting magnet, two sample positioners, one dilution refrigerator system with insert, one helium-3 dipper, and all necessary additional items to make turn-key systems as described below. The “Ultra-Low Temperature (ULT) Inserts” refer collectively to the dilution refrigerator and the helium-3 dipper. The “Magnet System” is the full turnkey system which includes all equipment related to the operation of the magnet and sample well, exclusive of the ULT inserts. The “Variable Temperature Interface (VTI)” is the interface between the Magnet System and the ULT inserts and is also known as the Sample Well.

Specification

1.4. Full System Requirements

1.4.1. The entire system must be cryogen free (no liquid helium or liquid nitrogen required) and must only require an initial charge of Helium gas to initialize a self-cooling cryogenic system.

1.4.2. Circulation Systems

1.4.2.1. All circulation pumps must be oil-free (aka “dry”), Kashiyama Neodry Series, or equivalent.

1.4.2.2. Minimum rate 500 L/min.

1.4.2.3. Circulating helium must have a reliable trap for filtering the mixture in order to remove impurities. The cryogen free requirement does not include the liquid nitrogen necessary for the circulation trap(s).

1.4.2.4. There must be a mechanism to regenerate the trap(s).

1.4.3. NCNR will provide the 3He gas for the 3He/4He mixtures.

1.4.3.1. The 3He/4He mixtures must be optimized by the contractor and the contractor must document the total amount of 3He gas in each system. The contractor must return all unused 3He gas at the time of system delivery. It is acceptable to have the remainder of the 3He to be returned in the “mixture” form if the mixture is documented.

1.4.4. The VTI internal dimensions must be compatible with both existing NCNR dilution refrigerator inserts. The VTI interface “1K pot” must be compatible with existing NCNR dilution refrigerators. NCNR will provide dimensions.

1.5. Magnet System Requirements

1.5.1. The closed-cycle refrigerators must include 1-2 cold heads, 2-4 helium gas flexlines, and 1-2 air-cooled compressors. No recirculating water packs or external water service connections are permitted. No multi-part indoor/outdoor air units are permitted.

1.5.2. The magnet temperature must not increase by more than 1 Kelvin during sample change with ULT inserts or sample positioners (as long as this temperature rise does not interfere with the super conducting phase of the magnet). The system must have sufficient cooling power to independently cool the magnet coils and the sample space.

1.5.3. All circulating helium in the magnet system must be isolated from the inner volume of the VTI (variable temperature interface) at all times. The system must be designed so that circulating helium cannot mix with the helium for sample change.

1.5.4. Magnetic field direction at the sample position must be vertical.

1.5.5. The magnet coils must be symmetric.

1.5.6. The coils may be either tapered or non-tapered. Tapered is preferred.

1.5.7. The magnet must have a center tap to allow small vertical offset of the magnetic field center.

1.5.8. The magnet coils must be supported sufficiently to withstand radial and axial forces due to ferromagnetic materials in the surrounding environment.

1.5.9. The contractor must provide stray field models for the magnet.

1.5.10. NIST will provide analysis of forces due to the surrounding environment.

1.5.11. The magnet coils must be shielded by neutron absorbing materials, and the shielding must not contain any cadmium near the split.

1.5.12. Maximum Aluminum in Beam Path: MABP is the uniform total thickness of aluminum alloy in the beam path from outside the cryostat to the sample and then exiting the cryostat, for the entire azimuthal beam path access window (w). MABP does not include any thickness of ancillary equipment inserted into the well, such as the sample can, sample itself, or the vacuum can of a dilution refrigerator.

1.5.12.1. The sample position is defined as the intersection of the neutron beam centerline and the central axis of the magnet.

1.5.12.2. Azimuthal Beam Path Window (w): Single azimuthal section through which the neutron beam can pass to the sample position and out again without encountering any material except aluminum and the sample.

1.5.12.3. Only uniformly distributed, high purity aluminum alloy is permitted in the Azimuthal Beam Path Window.

1.5.12.4. Dark Angle (DA): All connections between the magnet coil split sections should be concentrated in a single azimuthal section no larger than DA=360-w degrees.

1.5.13. Incident Beam Access Window: This is an exception to the uniformity requirement for the azimuthal beam path window. The magnet separation supports must include one window which consists of radially aligned entry holes for the incident beam, in which there is no material at all. The size of the window must be 40mm wide and extend the full height of the coil separation. The access window must be close to the Dark Angle, so that the azimuthal beam path window is still a single section.

1.5.14. Persistent mode not permitted, magnet must always run in direct current mode.
