1. Background Under the authority of Title I, Sec. 101 Homeland Security Act of 2002 as amended, established the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to prevent terrorist attacks within the United States; reduce the vulnerability of the United States to terrorism; minimize the damage and assist in the recovery from terrorist attacks that do occur within the United States.
The mission of U. S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Air and Marine Operations (AMO) is to protect the American people and the Nation’s critical infrastructure through the coordinated use of integrated air and marine forces to detect, interdict, and prevent acts of terrorism and the unlawful movement of people, illegal drugs, and other contraband toward or across the borders of the United States. To meet its mission, AMO utilizes a unique combination of authorities, capabilities, and expertise in the air and maritime environments.
AMO aircraft provide over-watch capabilities to agents on the ground and marine assets offshore covering the 48 contiguous States and Puerto Rico. AMO’s aircraft offer real-time surveillance capabilities for detection, identification, interdiction and intelligence gathering. To provide real time situational awareness to other personnel, platforms, and groups during mission execution, AMO light enforcement and medium lift helicopter and fixed wing aircraft are equipped with augmented reality and video map overlay systems for coordination and execution of joint operations with Federal, State, local, and tribal law enforcement (LE) partners. These systems are critical for the successful identification, detection and interdiction of vessels, vehicles, aircraft, and unlawful personnel, target of interest (TOI) surveillance, and over-watch of key National Security Special Events (NSSE).
