Two shipping locations:
1: One unit ships to: 8560 Progress Drive Frederick, MD 21702
2: One Unit shipd to: 40 Convent Drive, Bldg 40, Room 4607, Bethesda, MD 20892
Specification Requirements:
1Sample incubation always at 100% RH for any valid operating temperature, ultrasonically controlled
2Minimized contamination risk during grid transfer
3Wide range of Temperature (4-60°C)
4Variable blotting frequency and pressure
5Storage and use of approved experimental conditions from existing plunge-freezing units
6Compatible with time resolved studies and existing training and vitrification processes
7Built-in touch screen operation with Linux controller
8Left and right handed operation without any reconfiguration
9Semi-automated grid transfer
10Fully automated, reproducible vitrification of aqueous suspensions
11High resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of biological samples instantly frozen in ultra thin layers
Instrument control
12Linux operating system
13Touch screen control and set-up
14Mouse and foot pedal controls
Sample application
15Small sample volumes can be applied manually with a pipette through a small side port on the left and the right side of the climate chamber
16Both application time and wait time (between application and blotting) software controlled and can be set in the user interface
17Precisely timed control of multiple sample applications, blotting actions, and vitrification enables time resolved analysis of interactions among separately applied components
Blotting device
18Excess fluid is removed from the grid by (repeated) blotting with filter paper on rotating foam pads
19Number of blotting actions (max. 16 times for one grid) and duration of blotting are software controlled and can be set in the user interface
20Longitudinal grid positioning (‘blot offset’) and wait time between blotting and vitrification (‘drain time’) are user definable
Vitrification process
21Automated shutter control allows smooth, instant injection of the sample grid into the coolant (liquid ethane or propane). A lift for the container brings the coolant close to the shutter to ensure optimal vitrification
22Synchronous lowering of the coolant container and the grid holder keeps the grid submerged in the coolant and minimizes the risk of contamination prior to transfer ring the sample into a storage box or cryo holder. Minimized contamination risk during grid transfer by keeping the frozen grid submerged in coolant after vitrification
23Coolant container with integrated anti-contamination ring
24Grid transfer from the coolant towards a grid box in the liquid nitrogen environment is semi automated
Technical specifications (must not exceed these dimensions)
25Dimensions: Small lab bench footprint of 413/260/890 mm (L x W x H)
26Power supply: • Voltage 110 – 230 V • 50 – 60 Hz • Fuse 4 AT (110 V USA) • Fuse 2 AT (230 V Europe) • Power cable 90 – 250 V
Operating parameters
27The instrument must have a compact footprint to fit a small bench and be equipped with a built-in touch screen to operate the robot. The blotting chamber must be accessible from both Left and right handed operation without any reconfiguration, with immediate access to both left and right sides of the blotting chamber. The device must blot grids from both sides simultaneously. The blotting has to be done under an angle to create the gradient of vitreous ice.
28Working temperature 4–60° C (at an ambient temperature range between 18–25° C)
29Peltier controlled heating/cooling
30Maintain relative humidity at 100%
31Ultrasonic controlled humidification
Double-sided, simultaneous blotting

The instrument must have a compact footprint to fit a small bench and be equipped with a built-in touch screen to operate the robot. The robot must have mouse and foot pedal controls. The blotting chamber must be accessible from both the left and right sides of the instrument. The instrument must provide possibility to apply samples manually with a pipette through a small side port on the left and the right side of the instrument. Both application and wait time should be controlled with the software. The device must blot grids from both sides simultaneously. Excess fluid should be removed from the grid by blotting with filter paper on rotating foam pads. The blotting force must be variable and should be controlled with the software. The blotting has to be done under an angle to create the gradient of vitreous ice. The device must support up to 16 blotting actions per grid. The controls for the blot offset and drain time must be present. The instrument must have automated shutter control. Once the grid is submerged in liquid ethane, the coolant container must be able to move down synchronously with the sample. Grid transfer from the coolant chamber to the grid box could be semi-automated.

52.211-6 Brand Name or Equal.
As prescribed in 11.107(a), insert the following provision:

Brand Name or Equal (Aug 1999)

(a) If an item in this solicitation is identified as "brand name or equal," the purchase description reflects the characteristics and level of quality that will satisfy the Government’s needs. The salient physical, functional, or performance characteristics that "equal" products must meet are specified in the solicitation.

(b) To be considered for award, offers of "equal" products, including "equal" products of the brand name manufacturer, must-

(1) Meet the salient physical, functional, or performance characteristic specified in this solicitation;

(2) Clearly identify the item by-

(i) Brand name, if any; and

(ii) Make or model number;

(3) Include descriptive literature such as illustrations, drawings, or a clear reference to previously furnished descriptive data or information available to the Contracting Officer; and

(4) Clearly describe any modifications the offeror plans to make in a product to make it conform to the solicitation requirements. Mark any descriptive material to clearly show the modifications.

(c) The Contracting Officer will evaluate "equal" products on the basis of information furnished by the offeror or identified in the offer and reasonably available to the Contracting Officer. The Contracting Officer is not responsible for locating or obtaining any information not identified in the offer.

(d) Unless the offeror clearly indicates in its offer that the product being offered is an "equal" product, the offeror shall provide the brand name product referenced in the solicitation.
