About this file

This document outlines salient characteristics for an analytical balance required by the Organic Methods Group at the Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 Laboratory Services and Applied Sciences Division. The balance will support the preparation of analytical standards, reagents, and samples for low-level pesticides analysis, alkylphenols analysis, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances analysis.

The required analytical balance must be a benchtop model with an enclosed weighing chamber featuring an automated enclosure that opens at the touch of a button for hands-free measurement. The weighing pan must measure approximately 80 mm x 80 mm with a solid surface. Minimum technical specifications include readability of 0.01 milligrams (ten thousandths place), repeatability below 0.02 mg at 5% load, linearity deviation of 0.1 mg or below, and a maximum weighing capacity of 120 grams. The balance must incorporate an anti-electrostatic component to remove electrostatic charges from the weighing chamber and must connect to a computer running Microsoft Windows 11 Enterprise via USB or USB-C cable (cable must be included if not automatically provided). Additional requirements include a print button or equivalent to send mass readings to a computer and compliance with ISO 17025 certification standards, with certification at installation included in the quote.

Text version

Listed below are salient characteristics for an analytical balance that will meet the needs of the Organic Methods Group at the Region 5 Laboratory Services and Applied Sciences Division for the preparation of analytical standards, reagents, and samples for low-level pesticides analysis, alkylphenols analysis, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances analysis.

· The balance must be a benchtop analytical balance, meaning the weighing area is enclosed in a chamber to minimize air flow and dust contaminants, with a solid weighing area (or pan size) of approximately 80 mm x 80 mm.

· The balance must have a weighing chamber that is automated, meaning the enclosure opens at the touch of a button or equivalent to allow for hands-free measurement and increased automation.

· At a minimum, the balance must be capable of measuring mass to the ten thousandths place (i.e. “X” in 0.000X). In other terms, the readability of the balance must be 0.01 milligrams, at a minimum.

· The repeatability must be below 0.02 mg at a 5% load.

· The linearity deviation must be 0.1 mg or below.

· At a minimum, the balance must be capable of weighing up to 120 grams.

· The balance must have an anti-electrostatic component built in to remove any electrostatic charge from the weighing chamber.

· The balance must be able to connect to a computer with a Microsoft Windows 11 Enterprise operating system via USB or USBC cable or equivalent. If said cable is not automatically included with the balance, it must be added to the quote.

· The balance must have a print button or equivalent to be able to send mass readings to a computer.

· The balance must meet the laboratory’s ISO 17025 certification standard and be certified during installation. Said ISO 17025 certification at installation must be included with the balance on any quote.
