MEMORANDUM FOR MICC S2P2 Office
SUBJECT: Brand Name Letter for US Army Marksmanship Unit, FedBid Buy # 921264
1. The United States Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) is requesting the approval for the brand name procurement of a Bridgeport Milling Machine. The USAMU custom firearms shop (CFS) currently has four Bridgeport mills that all twenty personnel in the shop are fully trained and authorized to use. If any other brand mill is bought it would require countless man hours to retrain personnel how to operate, hold tolerance for our critical tolerance parts and perform safely the required maintenance of the machine.
With our current Bridgeport mills, specialized accessories were made to fit this series machine with 2-J head motor, not having this brand can potentially pose a hazard to the equipment and personnel using incompatible accessories. Also, fabricating, ordering, and funding new attachments/accessories will render any other brand machine inoperable until these items are purchased, putting more work load on current machine and loss of production time, negatively affecting the mission; potentially causing mission failure. The Bridgeport two horse power (HP) mill 2-J head motor with attachments is the largest electrical load that will not exceed the current electrical supply in our 87-year old building, this specification cannot exceed 2HP electrical requirement and cannot go below as to not perform its intended functions.
2. The USAMU’s CFS personnel have made contact with many different vendors through various trade shows, internet research and visiting machine dealers. They are continually conducting market research on machinery and techniques that will provide them with the ability to meet the unit’s mission of compete and win.
3. For the reasons listed above, the USAMU request that a brand name purchase of a Bridgeport Milling Machine.
