About this file

This document is a technical specification and operational guide for automatically retracting telescoping sprinklers manufactured by Sprinkler Innovations Inc. The sprinklers feature an automatic retraction mechanism that returns the sprinkler head to a concealed position after water supply pressure is removed from the system, simplifying annual maintenance and testing procedures without requiring manual repositioning from inside the chamber.

The document outlines mandatory testing and maintenance requirements for these sprinklers in compliance with NFPA 25 standards. Annual testing involves pressurizing the supply piping with compressed air in 10 psi increments up to a maximum of 30 psi, with full sprinkler deployment required at or below 30 psi. Visual confirmation of full deployment and automatic retraction must be verified, and any sprinkler failing to fully deploy or retract must be repaired and re-tested. The document also specifies that deluge valves controlling preaction sprinkler systems require annual full-flow trip testing, and recommends configuring the supply valve arrangement with a test header and isolation valve to prevent flooding the sprinkler distribution system during testing. Additionally, the telescoping sprinklers require servicing once every five years.

Figure 8 – Automatically retracting telescoping sprinklers.

The telescoping sprinklers manufactured by Sprinkler Innovations Inc., as shown in Figure 8.have an automatic retracting feature that returns the sprinkler back to the concealed position after the water supply pressure is removed from the system.

This improvement makes the required annual testing of the systems a simple operation since the sprinklers do not have to be pushed back into place from the inside of the chamber.

In accordance with NFPA 25, the deluge valves controlling preaction sprinkler systems are required to be trip tested under full flow on an annual basis In order to prevent flooding the sprinkler piping and the subsequent time and effort to drain the system, the supply valve arrangement for the system can be configured with a test header and an isolation valve on the discharge of the deluge vales that prevents water from entering the sprinkler distribution system during the annual testing. (See picture below)

The telescoping sprinklers are also required to be tested for proper operation on an annual basis. The manufacturers recommend method for testing the telescoping sprinklers is to pressurize the supply piping with air to cause the sprinklers to deploy. The pressurizing is to be conducted by connecting a compressed air supply to the system and gradually increasing the pressure in 10 psi increments until a maximum pressure of 30 psi is reached. The sprinklers should fully deploy at 30 psi or less. Once the system is pressurized at 30 psi, the full deployment of each sprinkler should be visually confirmed. Upon completion of the testing, the air pressure is gradually removed. Full automatic retraction of the sprinklers should be visually verified. Any sprinkler that does not fully deploy or fully retract should be repaired and verified as performing properly.

In addition to annual testing, the telescoping sprinklers are required to be serviced once every five years.
