TITLE: Transducer Laser Amplifier

Requesting Laboratory / Division / Group:

Communications Technology Laboratory Radio Frequency Technology Division Highspeed Measurements Group (672.03)

General Statement of Need:

The product to be procured is a high-power, low-noise, widely operable laser amplifier system with a nominal center wavelength of 1064 nm, which will be essential for the operation of microwave-optical transducer devices being developed by collaborators at the University of Colorado and Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics (CU-JILA). As part of the quantum networking project within the Communications Technology Laboratory (CTL), these CU-JILA transducer devices will be installed at NIST, with the amplified laser acting as the coherent pump required to achieve quantum operation. The high mechanical stability of this generation of transducer is accomplished with a partially fixed transducer cavity design whereby it is the laser, and thus the laser amplifier, that must be tuned into optical resonance. Previously, the CU-JILA collaborators identified only a few laser amplifier systems which meet all necessary and stringent performance requirements. Unfortunately, the amplifier system which the CU-JILA collaborators use is no longer commercially available. Therefore, the laser amplifier to be acquired by NIST must have equivalent optical performance such that the transducers installed at NIST will operate in the same way.

The primary technical requirement is a wide operating range of at least 30 nm, which allows the laser to achieve resonance with partially and fully fixed transducer cavity designs. The second technical requirement is a gain of at least 30 dB, allowing the laser to traverse the many lossy optical elements needed for beam preparation before addressing the transducer devices themselves. The third technical requirement is an integrated system for temperature stabilization, current control, and remote programmable control of the device.

Additional technical specifications are noted below.

Vendor lead times which will impact CTL quantum network project milestones are an important consideration. The purchase of the unique laser to be used in these measurements was awarded via Sole Source Justification on 4/20/22, with an expected delivery date of mid-December 2022. In order for the amplifier to be used upon arrival of the laser, quoted lead times of no more than 10 weeks must be considered beyond meeting all technical specifications.
