About this file

This document is a collection of appendices supporting a federal grant opportunity related to the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Appendix A provides a map identifying all counties within the Chesapeake Bay watershed across multiple states, with a reference link to a full map. Appendix B details the NPS Chesapeake Gateways interpretive themes framework, originally published in 2000 and renewed in 2021, which organizes Chesapeake stories into seven thematic categories: The Living, Natural Chesapeake; Peoples of the Chesapeake; Settlement of the Chesapeake; An Economic Resource: Commerce, Productivity, & Transportation; Military and Naval Presence on the Chesapeake; The Chesapeake as a Source of Recreation and Renewal; and Environmental Stewardship and Viability. Each theme includes multiple subtopics addressing ecological, historical, cultural, and contemporary aspects of the region.

Appendices C and D provide budget guidance and templates for grant applicants. Appendix C presents a sample detailed budget template (not mandatory) with cost categories including Personnel, Fringe Benefits, Equipment, Supplies, Travel, Other, and Contractual expenses, with calculations performed in designated cells. Appendix D provides detailed notes on SF-424A budget cost categories, specifying documentation requirements for each line item in accordance with federal form Section B lines 6.a through 6.j. Key requirements include equipment defined as items exceeding $5,000 with useful life over one year, a maximum indirect cost rate of 15% unless a Negotiated Indirect Cost Rate Agreement (NICRA) is provided, and noted that construction projects are not supported except for structural improvements. Cost share is not required for this NOFO.

Appendix B. Chesapeake Gateways Interpretive Themes

This appendix includes an overview of the NPS Chesapeake Gateways interpretive themes as presented in the Chesapeake Gateways Network Framework document:

Introduction

Chesapeake Gateways uses a thematic structure for organizing Chesapeake stories. The structure was informed by regional workshops and developed through an assorted group of interpreters, planners, educators, and researchers, and was originally published in 2000 and renewed in 2021.

The thematic structure, updated slightly, does not prescribe specific themes for particular sites.

Rather, it fosters our collective ability to create cohesive interpretation by placing specific stories in broader Chesapeake Bay watershed-wide context.
