About this file

This document is a memorandum from the United States Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) justifying the replacement of 15 Vidmar cabinets aboard the NOAA Ship Pisces. The existing cabinets, installed during the ship's commissioning in 2009, have deteriorated due to prolonged exposure to humidity, vibration, and operational wear, resulting in corrosion, drawer misalignment, locking mechanism failures, and compromised structural integrity.

The memo requests delivery of the replacement cabinets no later than September 30, 2025, to be delivered to the NOAA Marine Operations Center – Atlantic (MOC-A) located at 439 West York Street in Norfolk, VA 23510. The document emphasizes that the replacement is critical for maintaining secure, organized, and mission-ready storage of equipment and supplies in the marine environment, and that substantial effort was invested in finding a provider that meets the ship's needs while offering competitive pricing.

MEMORANDUM FOR: Resource Management Branch

Operations Officer, NOAA Ship Pisces, R-226

SUBJECT: Justification for Vidmar Cabinet Replacement

1. Purpose:

This memo outlines the justification for replacing 15 Vidmar cabinets currently installed aboard NOAA Ship Pisces, These cabinets are essential for secure, organized, and mission-ready storage of equipment and supplies in a demanding marine environment.

2. Justification:

The existing Vidmar cabinets were installed at the time of the ship’s commissioning in 2009.

Now over 15 years old, they have reached the end of their functional life. Prolonged exposure to humidity, vibration, and operational wear has led to corrosion, drawer misalignment, locking mechanism failures, and diminished structural integrity. Failing drawer systems and degraded cabinets pose safety hazards to crew and risk damaging stored equipment. A substantial amount of effort was put into finding a provider that can meet the ships needs, while also offering a reasonable price compared to similar vendors– this is the ships preferred choice.

3. Delivery:

a. Delivery is requested no later than September 30, 2025.

b. Location:

NOAA Marine Operations Center – Atlantic (MOC-A) NOAA Ship Pisces 439 West York Street Norfolk, VA 23510

4. Cost Summary:

a. Quantity: 15 Vidmar Cabinets
