Definition
The nearly round or ovoid fruit, 1-1/2 to 3 inches wide, has a tough rind that is smooth and waxy and ranging in hue from dark purple with faint, fine white specks, to light yellow or pumpkin-color. Within is a cavity more or less filled with an aromatic mass of double walled, membranous sacs containing orange-colored, pulpy juice and as many as 250 small, hard, dark brown or black, pitted seeds. The unique flavor is appealing, musky, guava-like and sweet/tart to tart.
The yellow form has generally larger fruit than the purple, but the pulp of the purple is less acid, richer in aroma and flavor, and has a higher proportion of juice
About UNSPSC 50305200
UNSPSC 50305200 Passion fruit (Class) represents fresh produce supply contracts, though the recent state and local opportunities tagged to this code span a far broader commodity family — fresh fruits and vegetables, breakfast and lunch staples, and multi-item grocery provisioning for institutional food service. State and local governments buy passion fruit only incidentally within these broader produce and food-service solicitations; the code sees its primary application across school nutrition programs, correctional facilities, mental health centers, senior services, child care programs, and regional parks. Issuing bodies include state departments of corrections and mental health, county school districts, city procurement offices, and special-purpose entities such as Head Start organizations and health care coalitions. School districts dominate the recent activity, with offerings from Madison Metropolitan School District, Bartow County Schools, DeSoto County Schools, Dougherty County Schools, Bryan County Schools, Hancock County Schools, and Early County Schools spanning multiple states. Correctional and mental health departments issue regularly as well — the Texas Department of Criminal Justice has posted multiple fresh-produce solicitations in recent weeks, as has the Illinois Department of Corrections and the Illinois Department of Mental Health.
Recent opportunities cluster heavily in the Southeast and Texas. Texas Department of Criminal Justice has issued multiple RFQs for fresh fruits and vegetables to prison food warehouses in Palestine, Snyder, and Wynne with response deadlines in mid-October 2026. School districts in Georgia (Bartow, Bryan, Dougherty, Hancock, Early, and unidentified state sources) are issuing sealed-bid and RFP procurements for fresh produce, with bids due May through June 2026 and contract terms beginning July 2026. Madison Metropolitan School District in Wisconsin issued two separate RFBs in July 2026 — one for 70–90 cases of petite bananas weekly (estimated annual value $78,000) and another for ready-to-eat fresh fruit and vegetable snacks sourced within 400 miles of Madison with 5,900 servings weekly for a Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. Illinois Department of Corrections' Joliet Treatment Center is seeking fresh produce on a bi-weekly delivery cycle under a small-business set-aside with prevailing wage requirements. Head Start of Greater Dallas is bidding approximately 32,409 cases of frozen foods, produce, and meat totaling $969,460.94 estimated value. Cities including San Antonio, Bridgeport, and Edinburg are procuring grocery items and specialized meal-program supplies for school nutrition and senior services. Most school districts require Buy American compliance (minimum 51% domestic agricultural content), HACCP plans, compliance with USDA nutrition standards, and insurance coverage of $500,000 to $1,000,000 general liability. Delivery schedules typically mandate early-morning windows (5:00–7:00 a.m. or 6:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m.), weekly or bi-weekly performance, and temperature-controlled transport.
