NIGP 79040: Seed Potatoes

NIGP 79040 Seed Potatoes, an Item code, covers seed potato procurement by state and local agencies for agricultural operations and institutional food production. The code captures both wholesale seed potato purchases for large-scale cultivation and smaller institutional orders for cafeteria and dining operations. State and local issuers soliciting under this code include state departments of agriculture, correctional institutions with farm or food-service operations, and county or municipal parks departments managing agricultural programs. The scope spans certified seed potatoes for planting, potato varieties for institutional kitchen use, and related seed stock meeting specified disease-resistance and quality standards.

State and local procurement activity under 79040 appears limited based on recent postings. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice issued an IFB for Irish potato seeds with a same-day posting and due date of March 5, 2026, indicating expedited procurement for institutional food service or farm operations. Geographic activity is concentrated in states with significant agricultural extension services or correctional systems managing farm programs; Texas represents the most recent documented jurisdiction. No other state or local opportunities have posted under this code in the snapshot provided, suggesting either low demand or consolidation of seed potato procurement through cooperative purchasing vehicles or blanket standing contracts with agricultural suppliers.
