NIGP 70085: Typesetting Machines and Supplies, Ludlow

NIGP 70085 Typesetting Machines and Supplies, Ludlow is an Item code encompassing the procurement of Ludlow typesetting equipment and related consumable supplies for letterpress and hot-metal composition work. State and local governments purchase under this code primarily when operating in-house print shops or supporting historical printing operations, heritage facilities, or educational programs in letterpress technology. The code captures both the mechanical typesetting machines themselves and the supplies required to operate them — matrices, metal sorts, ink, and maintenance materials. Issuing bodies under this code tend to be small, specialized purchasing units within state arts or cultural agencies, municipal print departments, or school districts with vocational or educational printing programs. The narrow scope of this Item code reflects the niche market for Ludlow equipment; few jurisdictions maintain active hot-metal composition operations in the modern printing environment.

No recent state or local contract opportunities are available for this code in the source provided. The absence of posted solicitations reflects the marginal role Ludlow typesetting plays in contemporary public-sector printing procurement — most state and local governments transitioned away from hot-metal composition decades ago, and demand for this equipment and its supplies is minimal to nonexistent among active procurement offices today.
