NIGP 55951: Insulation, Train

NIGP 55951 Insulation, Train is an Item code that covers insulation materials and installation services for railroad rolling stock and associated infrastructure. State and local governments procure under this code primarily for transit authority maintenance and repair of commuter rail, light rail, and heritage railroad equipment, as well as occasional renovation or construction projects involving train-themed or rail-connected facilities. The issuing bodies soliciting under the code include municipal governments, county transit authorities, and regional rail agencies responsible for fleet preservation and operational infrastructure.

The City of Folkston, Georgia, posted an IFB in March 2026 (Solicitation No. PE62422NONST2026000000004, response due April 21, 2026) for construction of a train caboose–replica public toilet facility that includes roofing, structural elements, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems—a specialized application of train-themed architectural work rather than direct railroad equipment insulation. Geographic activity under this code concentrates in states with active commuter rail, heritage railroad preservation programs, and transit-dependent urban centers; the recent Folkston opportunity represents municipal procurement in Georgia. Limited recent state and local solicitation activity appears in the available records, suggesting the code serves a narrow market of rail transit operators and specialized municipal projects rather than broad-based government purchasing.
