About this award

This $200,000 Project Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities' Promotion of the Humanities Division of Preservation and Access program (CFDA 45.149) will support The Language Conservancy, Inc. in developing the first comprehensive online Arizona Apache Dictionary. Over the one-year period from October 1, 2021 to September 1, 2022, the grant will fund retention of seven staff members and hiring of seven contract personnel from the Arizona Apache community. Key activities include high-quality audio recordings of dictionary entries by fluent Arizona Apache speakers, evaluation and standardization of existing Apache language database records, integration of audio with textual entries, development of a project website and dictionary interface, and release of a beta version of the online dictionary to collect feedback. The expected outcome is a trilingual online dictionary containing the Northern, Central, and Eastern Arizona Apache dialects, providing culturally relevant definitions, translations, audio pronunciations and sample sentences in an accessible format to benefit the Arizona Apache people and broader public.
