THE TWO-PART PROJECT WILL 1) PUBLICLY LAUNCH COMMUNITY-DRIVEN PRIMARY MATERIAL RELATING TO THE SOUNDSCAPES AND STORIES OF MIGRATION FROM THE BAYVIEW-HUNTER'S POINT COMMUNITY ONTO OUR SOUNDS OF CALIFORNIA MICROSITE, INCLUDING A BROWSABLE ARCHIVE OF SOUNDS AND STORIES AS WELL AS INTERPRETIVE CONTENT DEVELOPMENT BY HUMANITIES PROFESSIONALS ON ACTA'S STAFF, AND 2) LAUNCH A NEW PROGRAM CYCLE OF SOUNDS OF CALIFORNIA IN THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY, WHICH WILL CENTER ON DOCUMENTATION AND PUBLIC HUMANITIES EVENTS EXPLORING THE SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC HISTORY OF THE CULTURAL COMMUNITIES OF THE UNDERSTUDIED SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY THROUGH SOUNDS, STORIES, AND INTERPRETATION. THIS PROJECT WILL CULTIVATE GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF THE CULTURAL COMMUNITIES OF CALIFORNIA THROUGH PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT CENTERED AROUND THE VOICES OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND CULTURE BEARERS.] [PURPOSE: THIS PROJECT WILL FUND THE NEXT PHASE OF THE ALLIANCE FOR CALIFORNIA TRADITIONAL ARTS (ACTA)'S SOUNDS OF CALIFORNIA PROJECT, A STATEWIDE PUBLIC HUMANITIES PROJECT EXPLORING MUSIC AND SOUNDSCAPES IN THE DIVERSE COMMUNITIES OF CALIFORNIA. IT ALSO FUNDS THE CATALOGUING AND MAKING AVAILABLE THE MATERIALS COLLECTED FROM THEIR 2018 SOUNDS OF CALIFORNIA PROGRAM, INCLUDING THEIR PUBLIC CONCERTS, COMMUNITY RECORDINGS, AND MULTIMEDIA STORIES.  ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: THIS PROJECT WILL CATALOGUE PUBLIC CONCERT RECORDINGS BY AFRICAN-AMERICAN, VIETNAMESE, KURDISH, AND CHICANO COMMUNITIES ON THE TOPIC OF MIGRATION; THE COMMUNITY RECORDINGS OF STORIES AND DEFINITIONS OF BELONGING BASED ON SOUNDS; AND THE MULTIMEDIA STORIES INTERPRETING WHAT THIS SOUNDSCAPE MEANS FOR THE STATE AND ITS HISTORY. IT FUNDS THE CREATION OF A MICROSITE REPOSITORY THAT ALSO OPERATES AS A MEANS OF ACCESSING AND INTERPRETING THESE RECORDINGS.    THIS PROJECT WILL ALSO START THE NEW CYCLE OF THE SOUNDS OF CALIFORNIA PROGRAM BY COLLECTING FIELD RECORDINGS OF CULTURE BEARERS, COMMUNITY MEMBERS, AND PROFESSIONAL MEDIA MAKERS AT CULTURALLY MEANINGFUL EVENTS AND SITES. THIS WILL BRING TOGETHER BOTH HUMANITIES SCHOLARS AND CULTURAL PRACTITIONERS TO DOCUMENT THE CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL SOUND EXPRESSIONS OF THE AREA. LASTLY, FUNDING FOR THIS PROGRAM WILL MAINTAIN FIVE STAFF POSITIONS: THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, MEDIA DIRECTOR, MEDIA AND DEVELOPMENT MANAGER, DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL INITIATIVES, AND PROGRAM MANAGER.  EXPECTED OUTCOMES: THIS PROJECT WILL RECORD, CATALOGUE, AND MAKE ACCESSIBLE RECORDINGS BY THE DIVERSE COMMUNITIES OF CALIFORNIA ABOUT ISSUES AFFECTING THE COMMUNITY, THEIR THOUGHTS ON BELONGING, AND THEIR ANALYSIS OF THE SONIC HISTORY AND LANDSCAPE OF THEIR REGIONS. THIS WILL ALSO BRING TOGETHER ACADEMIC SCHOLARS AND KEY COMMUNITY FIGURES IN UNDERSTANDING AND DISSEMINATING KNOWLEDGE ON THE SOUNDS OF CALIFORNIA AND THEIR IMPORTANCE TO THE STATE'S CULTURE AND HISTORY.   INTENDED BENEFICIARIES: THIS PROJECT BENEFITS THE DIVERSE COMMUNITIES WHO CONTRIBUTE THEIR STORIES TO THE PROJECT AND PARTICIPATE IN THE CONCERTS AND EVENTS THE PROJECT HOLDS. HAVING THESE RECORDINGS STORED AND AVAILABLE ONLINE THROUGH A WEBSITE MEANS THAT THESE MATERIALS ARE AVAILABLE TO PERSONS BOTH STATE-WIDE AND NATIONALLY.
