The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) is being awarded a $3,928,065 federal Project Grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) under the Medical Student Education (CFDA 93.680) program. The funding will support UNLV's Primary Care Touchpoints Education Program, which aims to increase the number of medical school graduates who select primary care residencies and ultimately increase the number of primary care physicians in Nevada. Key elements of the program include expanding clinical rotations in rural and medically underserved areas, enhancing the curriculum, providing coaching and mentorship, and implementing innovative interdisciplinary projects leveraging technologies like artificial intelligence. The overarching goal is to equip medical students, especially those from tribal, rural, and underserved communities, with the knowledge and experience to pursue primary care careers and serve Nevada's populations facing physician shortages. This award is part of HRSA's efforts to address critical primary care provider shortages in the top quintile of states, with the funding period running from September 2024 through June 2027.
