The Multicare Health System has been awarded a $1,500,000 Project Grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration's (HRSA) Advanced Nursing Education - Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (ANE-SANE) Program (CFDA 93.247). The purpose of this 3-year project is to expand opportunities for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) training in Washington State in order to enhance the capacity to provide high-quality, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive sexual assault forensic examinations.
Key components of the project include developing a new 40-hour SANE-A (adult/adolescent) didactic course and a 16-hour advanced, in-person clinical course. These courses will be offered quarterly and semiannually, respectively, across three regions of Washington State. The goal is to train at least 300 SANE-certified nurses, approximately doubling the state's SANE workforce. The project will target underserved populations by providing services in 11 HRSA-defined medically underserved areas through Multicare's network of 16 emergency departments. The project will also implement strategies to address barriers to SANE training and provide mentorship to encourage SANE retention.
